Mifflin County Girls LAX muscled out victory over Midd-West

LEWISTOWN – The MIfflin County girls lacrosse team was looking to pick up a special win on Senior night Wednesday, the Mifflin County girls hosted Midd-West in an afternoon contest.

The Huskies were celebrating the career of lone senior Brenna Alexander.

It was a successful night as the Lady Huskies defeated the Mustangs 15-8.

“We’ve had these little incremental challenges throughout the season we knew we were some players who never had a stick in their hands,” said Mifflin County coach Theresa LaMont. “So we tried to be a little mindful of how we wanted to progress. One thing I’m impressed with is that we really nailed down the midfield transition buisness where we can make a goalie clear and we can pass, pass, pass and get ready to shoot. We have worked that pretty hard.”

Mifflin County wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Bailey Wyland notched the first goal of the game as she blasted a shot at 11:30.

After a strong defensive stand by the Huskies, Wyland scored once again with 9:47 left in the first.

The Mustangs held strong in the Huskies third possession, forcing Mifflin County into a turnover.

But, the Huskies defense also stood strong and pushed the ball down to Mara Gallo making it 3-0 with 6:57 showing in the opening quarter.

Midd-West Claire Steininger put her team’s first points on the board with a blast that hit nothing but net.

Minutes later, Steininger brought team to within one as she slid a shot in the corner of the net making it 3-2.

But back battled the Huskies. Gallo put the Huskies back up by two at 1:35 mark of the first. She juked her way from behind the net to the front and sent a screamer in the net to make it a 4-2 contest.

Kiera Rose put the Mustangs back to within striking distance minutes into the second period.

Sammi Landis tied the contest at four at 10:04 with a run into the middle of the Huskies defense.

“They played well. There were a lot of things where people were falling and things of that nature. They kept their heads and kept their cool and we continued,” said Midd-West coach Kailey Wagner. “We didn’t win but they played together until the end of the game.”

On the following MIfflin County possession, GraceLynn Beckenbaugh called her own number going in the circle and coming out with a hard fought goal at 9:02.

The Huskies won the following face off and Gallo finished it off for the Huskies with a second Huskies goal. She tallied it at 8:30 left in the half.

Midd-West refused to stay long at 8:19 Alyssa Deubner put her name in the scoring column, cutting the score to 6-5.

Mifflin County continued its pressure on the Mustangs’ end of the field. Beckenbaugh hit her second of the game at 7:23 to go back up by two, 7-5.

The goal caused the Mustangs to call a time out.

The goals kept coming for Mifflin County. Gallo made it 8-5 as she took it to the heart of the Midd-West defense at 6:40.

Gallo again got the call at 5:41 and blasted yet another goal, upping the MIfflin County to 9-5.

The Huskies blasted the score of the half when Wyland stood in the middle of the circle and pushed it past the goalie, upping the score to 10-5.

In the second d half, Mifflin County goalie Zoe Foltz made quite the defensive statement.

The Second started off with a bang! Gallo took the ball off of a delay call and pushed it through the Mustangs’ goal at 11:37.

Lyron Knepp scored to extend the Huskies lead to 12-5 at 11:15.

Audrey Norman hit the lone third quarter goal for Midd-West.

Mifflin County added a late third period goal on a Krista Whitesel blast at 52.9, making it 13-6.

Issabella Snyder hit the first MIfflin County goal starting off the Huskies’ scoring in the final stanza at 11:10.

Gallo added a blast for her teams 15th and final goal of the game putting her team

up by nine with 9:05 left.

Two Midd-West goals cut the Huskies advantage to 15-8 with still over five minutes left.

But it would be too little too late as the Huskies went onto the 15-8 victory.
