SPRING MILLS – In their second meeting of the season, the Penns Valley girls battled the undefeated Bald Eagle Area volleyball team posting numerous long volleys despite falling in three sets.

Bald Eagle was tough throughout though, especially from the frontline as it was able to protect the center part of the court from easy drop in shots.

The Eagles took the contest winners of a 25-9, 25-17 and 25-9 victories.

In the first and third games, the Eagles got strong service points from Madison Rockey, Lexi Skripek and Grace Hugar en route to the identical 25-9 victories.

“We were pretty solid tonight. We stopped handling the ball in the second set. We got sloppy. A lot of one option Volleyball,” said Bald Eagle coach Lawrence Campbell. “They (Penns Valley) did a little better job defensively. I thought they served a lot better and we came out sloppy. The first six rotations we didn’t earn a point.”

In the second game, the Rams came out ready to do battle.

Penns Valley opened with a service point by Hailey Coursen thanks to a dink in the front row by Kayla Stover.

However, the Eagles found an open back line on the next serve giving the side out.

The two would battle back and forth exchanging six consecutive side outs before Penns Valley’s Kailen Winkleblech would send a blast that was deflected out of bounds by the front row of the Eagles, taking a 5-3 advantage.

“We played better tonight than we did the first time. I don’t think we got that close. The score even showed how close we were with them. I’m pretty proud of how hard they played because we had them on edge enough for him to keep his starters in, “ said Penns Valley coach Jayme Ishler. “I’m so proud of how they battled.”

Both teams would once again exchange consecutive side outs. This time it was five in-a-row.

Penns Valley held a 7-6 advantage with Bald Eagles’ Madison Rockey came up to the serving line.

She gave her team a boost, posting four consecutive points, three of those were long volleys that the Eagles would finish off, taking a 10-7 advantage.

Back came the Rams closing it a 2-point game on a key block by Grace Bressler.

However, the Eagles were relentless extending its lead a little each possession going up by as many as seven before taking the game and going up 25-17.

The momentum was all in the Eagles favor in the final contest as Hugar, Rockey and Elita Brown were just two much at the front and were stingy on letting anything behind them.

When you mix that with the serving ability of Rockey, Sydney Hill and Skripek, the Eagles were too tough despite a strong net game by the Rams.

In the end, the Eagles got the victory and the Rams gotca moral victory knowing they put up a fight to the reigning state champions.
