BELLEFONTE – What makes a good rivalry?

Just ask the Bellefonte and Bald Eagle Area girls softball teams.

Every year the two seem to be at the top or close to the top of the always-tough Mountain League.

Both are familiar to each other, especially with the close proximity to each other.

And most importantly, when the two get together they seem to bring out the best I each other.

Tuesday night was no exception as the friendly rivals hit the diamond for another classic battle and both teams’ defenses did not disappoint.

Bellefonte hurler Lexi Rogers was tough on the mound as was the Eagles’ pitcher Maddie Peters.

The game would be a pitcher’s duel  until the top of the fourth.

Ava Stere got the inning off and running with a single. She then stole second.

Rogers struck out Peters.

Kaitlyn Smitchko was hit by a pitch and was allowed first.

That would set the stage for some clutch hitting by Meghan King as she blasted a hit  into center field.

The hit would bring in a hustling Stere who plated the games only run.

However, the Lady Raiders gave it one last shot at tying the contest in the final at bats.

With two out, Tori Reichert was cool under pressure as she roped a single to centerfield.

She moved up to third on a double by Kierra Narehood, putting the tying and winning runs in scoring position.

But the Eagles kept that from happening as they held strong to capture the final out and surviving with the 1-0 victory.

Rogers had 10 strike outs in the losing effort while Peters also tallied 10.
