Baulblitz wins state gold; Cubbison finishes as 12th in state

UNIVERSITY PARK – The best of the best met at the Penn State Indoor Track and Field complex Sunday.

One Mifflin County and Juniata County runner were on hand to represent their school with the hopes of medaling in the PTFCA State Indoor Championships.

In the mile, Juniata’s Garrett Baublitz used a strong move out around his opponent late in the race to capture the State Championship with a time of 4:19.56.

“I just went into the race and seeing what everyone else was doing and to see what I could do. You can’t think about it to much,” said Baulblitz after his win. “I try to just go with the flow. I really don’t plan it out too much. Running is half mental and half physical. You get wrestled on the mental side, you’re done.”

Sophomore stand out, Kylee Cubbison ran a strong race also competing in the mile run.

She kept up with the pack for most of the race, finishing with a time of 5:14.59.

In her first season of indoor track, Cubbison was very proud to reach the state finals.

“I was very glad I was able to run here. It’s quite an honor to be running against the best runners in the state. I was so happy I was able to compete here,” Cubbison said. “I was nervous going in to it. Things didn’t go quite the way I wanted it to but it’s okay. It was a really good thing to be here. It was a learning experience. I think the whole Indoor season will get me ready for the outdoor season.”

Both runners will be the ones to watch in the upcoming outdoor track and field season.
