Bellefonte boys sweep season series over Bald Eagle

WINGATE – It was a rivalry renewal Thursday night as the Bald Eagle Area boys basketball team hosted Bellefonte in their last game against each other this season.

Before the contest, the Eagles honored their two seniors Everett Herr and Ayden Jodon. Both had some memorable points in the contest.

After a close first quarter, the Red Raider defense came alive while its defense was able to shut down the Eagles’ offense, leading to the 64-31 win.

The win concluded the season sweep as Bellefonte took the first meeting 53-28.

The Red Raiders finished with three players in double-digits.

Gannon Brungard tossed in 16 points while finishing with nine rebounds. Teammate Nick Way also notched 16.

Rounding out the leading scorers was Blair Eckley-Jones with 14.

Bald Eagle was led by the hard nosed effort of Alex Gavlock who finished with nine.

Rounding out the leading scorers for the Eagles was Ayden Jordan with seven.

In the first, Bellefonte’s Eckley-Jones made the most of the RedRaiders first possession as he stood behind the 3-point line and hit the triple.

After a Bald Eagle turnover, Bellefonte got the ball at the top of the key, hitting the jumper to give the RedRaiders a quick 5-0 advantage.

Here got his team on the scoreboard when he posted up in the lane for the bucket at 6:24.

Eckley-Jones picked up his fifth point of the game when he hit a strong shot in traffic.

But the Eagles bounced right back to cut the lead back to three thanks to a offensive rebound and put back.

The Red Raiders upped its advantage to a seven point contest on consecutive baskets by Brungard and a bucket by Trevor Johnson.

Bald Eagle refused to stay down. With 2:00 left, Hayden Vaughn roped a triple.

Ty Kroell and Way scored in a three point run, upping the lead to 14-6.

But the Eagles once again battled back, this time it would be Gavlock that would line up a three, at 14-11.

Kroell scored the last points in the quarter on a bucket underneath, making it a 16-11 contest after one.

Bellefonte wasted little time getting its momentum going in the second period.

Way notched four points on two successful trips down the court.

Eckley-Jones and Brungard added two more each, giving them a 14-point advantage.

Jodon got Bald Eagle back on the scoreboard as he pulled down an offensive board and put back, cutting it to a 25-13 lead.

Just as the Eagles would make a strong play, Bellefonte would kill the excitement with a play of their own.

Eckley-Jones again hit a Trey while Brungard scored a put back with 3:48 left in the first half.

Jodon plastered a triple, cutting it to a 30-16 contest.

But the Red Raiders outscored the Eagles the rest of the way,taking a 38-20 lead into the intermission.

In the second half, Bellefonte was able to keep its momentum on their side of the court despite the strong effort of the Eagles.

When the dust settled, the Red Raiders outscored Bald Eagle Area 23-11 en route to the 64-31 win.
