By Kenny Varner
MILESBURG – After two tough outings against Philipsburg-Osceola and Central, the Bellefonte softball team ended its week on a positive note in their game against Mountain League rival, Bald Eagle Area, winning 9-1 Friday night at the Lady Eagles’ home field.
Offensively, Bellefonte broke out the bats en route to a 12-hit performance.
Leading the way for the “White and Red” were Tara Baney who went 3-for-5 with a run as Alexis Wetzler also posted a 3-for-5 run 2RBI evening. Lissi Przybys continued the multiple hitters going 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run, Emily Pugh went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and Mallorie Smith rounded out things with 2-for-3 night with an RBI.
Baney had a strong night on the mound striking out eight while her defense helped her finish with a 4-hitter.
“In our last two games against Central and P-O I thought we hit the ball well. Unfortunately, the score was not in our favor but the played well. I think those two game prepared for tonight,” Bellefonte coach Fred Caldwell said. “They (Bellefonte) came out fired up and hit the ball very hard. Bald Eagle made some errors on defense but I think part of that was the fact that we did hit the ball hard and forced them to make plays they weren’t ready for.”
Bellefonte led off the game with two runs in the top of the first, Baney hit a seeing-eye infield single that bounced untouched between three Lady Eagles.
Wetzler moved Baney to third when she smacked a double into left.
With runners in scoring position, Rianna Trexler was up for the challenge singling in both Baney and Wetzler on the play, making it 2-0.
Baney set the Lady Eagles down in the bottom of the inning.
Bald Eagle held Bellefonte in the second but still couldn’t get one across the plate in the bottom of the second.
However, the Lady Raider bats came out firing on all cylinders in the third posting six runs on four hits.
Lissi Przybys led off the inning with a slow moving single to third and beat out for an infield single.
With one out, Angela Capperelle reached on a Bald Eagle miscue.
Jaelyn Smith’s patience at the plate proved beneficial as she walked to load the bases.
Emily Pugh put the Red Raiders up 4-0 as she slapped an 2RBI single to right.
Mallorie Smith singled home Jaelyn Smith, extending the lead and put Pugh in scoring position.
Baney then reached on a second Eagle miscue, loading the bases for a second time in the inning.
Wetzler smack her second double of the night, allowing Mallorie Smith and Pugh to touch home plate.
When the dust settled in the inning, Bellefonte had built an 8-0 advantage.
“Tonight’s deal was Bellefonte played all three phases of the game. They hit. They played defense and had good pitching,” Bald Eagle Area Manager Don Lucas said. “I thought we pitched well. All in all at the end of the day they played better tonight and we didn’t play well enough.”
Despite the Bellefonte lead, Bald Eagle Area continued to battle only allowing one run in the last four innings.
The Eagles got on the board in the fourth when Kaleigh Kinley doubled and later scored on an RBI single by Caitlynn Close.
“Hopefully, the next two games are going to be just as hard for us and get us ready for the playoffs,” Caldwell said.
