Bellefonte girls fall to tough Clearfield squad

BELLEFONTE – Tuesday, the Bellefonte girls soccer team went to battle with a 12-2 Clearfield team.

In a game that was closer than the score would indicate, the Bison went home the winners of a 5-2 Laurel Highlands match up at Bellefonte’s Rogers Stadium. With a constant rain starting just before the game, the two teams had to battle Mother Nature as well playing in slick conditions.

The Bison were led by a hat trick by Mia Smith, who had all of her goals in the second half. Two of which came with the game time under the 10-minute mark.

Clearfield led in shots by a 17-11 advantage.

Both teams finished with three corners each. .

Bellefonte goalie Roni Spotts finished with seven saves while Clearfield goalkeeper Mia Helsel had four in the win.

“I am pretty happy with their performance tonight. I know the score was 5-2 at the end but I don’t think it’s reflective of how our girls played,” said Bellefonte coach Stacey Miller. “I don’t think the score reflects the quality play that they had. I was pretty proud coming out and out and putting two on them a 12-2 team. They are a good team.”

The Lady Raiders got off to a strong start as they were able to take an early advantage.

Just minutes into the game, Bellefonte found itself with an early 1-0 advantage.

Madyson Miller found the back of the net as she posted an unassisted goal at 37:44. The Lady Raiders used that momentum and was able to play tough, especially early on with its backline.

The game was a back and forth battle with both defenses making strong plays. Bellefonte goalie Roni Spotts came up big holding off numerous Bison runs. She had five saves in the first half.

Neither team was able to score for the next 10 minutes of play.

The Lady Raiders added to its lead on a Brinley DeWeese shot with an assist from Brooke Whitman at 27:07.

But the tides started to slowly turn to Clearfield’s side as they began to take control of the possession.

Bellefonte was able to hold off the hard charging Bison for most to the half.

With 7:11 left Lydia Evans plastered an unassisted goal, cutting the Bellefonte lead to 2-1. .

With time running out, MyLeigh Hudson was able to blast a shot with 0:46 left, tying the contest at two going into the intermission.

The second half continued to be a battle for momentum as both teams knocked at the door, missing opportunities thanks to the defensive plays.

Just seconds short of the halfway mark Mia Smith gave her team the lead for the first time as she connected on a shot to the corner of the net at 20:47.

The game remained a one -score lead until under the 10-minute mark.

But at the 9:04 mark,  Smith hit her second goal of the game, upping the lead to 4-2.

Smith helped her team put some distance between the two teams as she plastered an unassisted goal at 4;09 left.

Bellefonte will be back in action Thursday as they travel to Philipsburg-Osceola.
