Bellefonte Little League opens season; Knights outlast Lions

Welcome back!

For the first time in over three months local sports is back.

In the opening day of Bellefonte Little League action, the Knights outlasted the Lions in a 8-5 contest.

Hitting wise, the Knights our hit the Lions by a 6-5 margin.

The combination of Amryn Carson and Cane Capparelle combined for 12 strikeouts and five hits en route to the victory.

Leading the way offensively for the Knights were Gavin Chalfa with a double and three RBIs along with a run scored and Cameron Lucas with a 2-for-4 performance.

Offensively, the Lions were led by Andrew Gull with three RBIs.

Both defenses started off strong as both tossed shut out innings for the first two innings.

Heading into the third, the Lions struck first posting the first three runs of the game.

Braeden Fortney led off the inning with a double to right.

Holden Howard followed with a walk.

Isaac Gull singled in Fortney with an RBI single to right.

Andrew Gull sacrificed home Howard on a chopper to second.

Garret Cain singled in Isaac Gull to end the scoring in the Lions half of the inning, taking a 3-0 advantage.

Back battled the Knights in the bottom off the inning, posting four to take back the lead.

Lucas posted his second hit of the game to lead things off.

Joey Swentosky followed with a fielders choice forcing Lucas out at second.

Madison Miller followed with an infield single.

Carson showed patience at the plate and loaded the bases with a walk.

Capperelle followed with an RBI walk, cutting the lead to 3-1.

But with the bases still loaded Chalfa sent a screaming line drive deep to centerfield, clearing his teammates off the base paths as he collected 3RBIs. He later scored to extend its lead to 5-3.

Not to be outdone, the Lions tallied back to toe things up in the fourth, posting a 2-run inning.

Like in the previous inning, Fortney and Howard both reached the base paths.

Andrew Gull brought both in on an 2 RBI single, sending it to the bottom of the inning knotted at five.

Things continued to sizzle offensively for the Knights as Carson and Swentosky scored to take back the advantage again.

After holding the Lions scoreless in the fifth, the Knights added a run to extend its lead to 8-5 heading into the final stanza.

Defensively, the Knights refused any runs as Gavin Lucas made a diving catch in the outfield for the final out.
