BELLEFONTE – A Monday night thriller.

Tyrone’s Alex Taylor ended the Bellefonte boys’ season with 12 seconds left with a tough cross goal, giving the Golden Eagles a trip to the championship game.

Taylor scored all four of his team’s goals en route to the District 6 Class AAA 4-3 win in a Monday night prime time affair.

The game from beginning to end was a battle for control. In the first, the Red Raiders took a 2-1 advantage but it would the Golden Eagles would get hot in the second, placing three goals in the process.

For Bellefonte, Mintesinot Borst scored two of his team’s three goals in the loss.

“Tyrone just wanted it more. They wanted it more tonight. They won the 50/50 balls. They passed the ball better. They were just the aggressor against us tonight,” said Bellefonte coach Scott Martz. “We had some great opportunities and all but we just couldn’t get them in there. Their keeper had some nice saves down there the last 12-15 minutes. We posted plenty of shots down there but we just couldn’t get it in.”

However, it would be the Red Raiders would take the first score.

After 13 minutes of back and forth play, Borst got free on a breakaway and finished it off with a goal with 27:05 showing on the clock.

Defensively, both team’s settled in and were successfully clearing the ball into safe spots of the field.

But less than 10 minutes later, Bellefonte was called for a takedown in the box, giving Tyrone a penalty kick at 17:24.

Taylor posted a blast that just out of the outstretched hands of goalie Quin Tooker, tying things at one.

With time running out in the first, Tyrone got called for a penalty in their own end, giving the Red Raiders a chance to take the lead.

Bellefonte went to Hayden Walker, to kick the PK as he was able to sneak it past Tyrone to take back the lead at 7:58.

Going into the second half, the Red Raiders scored quickly as Borst battled inside and posted his team’s third goal of the game, making it 3-1.

Taylor brought his team one step closer as he blazed his way downfield and scored on an unassisted goal, cutting it to a 3-2 contest.

Bellefonte stood its ground into the clock dropped below 14.

For the second time in the gale, the Red Raiders were accused of taking down a Golden Eagles’ player inside the box.

Again, they gave the ball to Taylor to put it past the Bellefonte goalie.

Taylor went high and in the top corner of the goal, tying the game at three.

The clock wound down late as each team were picking up the pace as the intensity increased as each second went if the clock.

It would be a long shot by Taylor that would put the game on ice.

He blasted a crossover shot, giving them the win.

Despite the loss, Martz was happy with the improvement of this year’s Mountain League champions.

“We were 4-13 or something like that last year. We knew it was going to be a rebuilding year for us,” said Martz. “Then to come through to this season with Covid and everything else we had to go through. These guys came out and won the Mountain League. They had a great season. It was just tough to see it end like that.”
