Bellefonte tops SC in extra inning affair

UNIVERSITY PARK- The last time the Bellefonte baseball team headlined the night at Medlar Field, the team came home with the PIAA state title.
On Saturday night, the Red Raiders were back in a prime time battle for Centre County against State College.
The early season game had a post season feel to it and as the night went on the game even upped its intensity as the game went into extra innings before Bellefonte scratched its way to a 7-6 victory over the Little Lions.
The game took many twists and turns as there were numerous lead changes before the game was finally decided.
Adam Armstrong picked up the win for the Red Raiders while Mason Mellott took the hard luck loss.
After shutting down State College in the top of the ninth, it would be Bellefonte’s turn to try to end the contest,
In the bottom of the ninth, Colton Burd lead off the inning reaching on a State College miscue.
Ray Watson kept things rolling along singling to left.
State College intentionally walked Dan Catchmark to load the bases.
Mellott struck out lead off hitter Tyler Kreger.
With one out, the Red Raiders took home the win as Logan Mathieu hit a slow. chopper that handcuffed the Little Lion shortstop and resulted in the second miscue of the inning, sending the Red Raiders home victorious.
State College got the game off and running as it scored in its first at bats.
Tyson Cooper got the game off and running with a simple walk. He was replaced by pinch runner Tyler Simpson.
Kenny Magnes singled in Simpson as he roped an RBI single to right field.
Both teams went down scoreless in the second as the Little Lions held a 1-0 advantage.
That would all change after a 3-run third inning to put the Red Raiders in the lead for the first time in the contest.
Kreger started the inning with a single that landed into left. He later stole second.
Mathieu followed with a walk.
CJ Funk loaded the bases as he was patient at the plate, taking a walk as well.
Cade Fortney singled in Kreger, tying the game at one.
Dylan Deitrich reached on a miscue, allowing Mathieu to score.
Garrett Reiter sacrificed in Funk to put the Red Raiders ahead 3-1 going into the fourth.
State College cut the lead to one as it collected a run in the top of the fourth, making it 3-2.
After holding Bellefonte scoreless in the bottom of the inning, State College rallied to take a one-run lead, playing two in the fifth.
Magnes led things off with an innocent walk. He moved up to second on a wild pitch.
Evan Smith moved up to third on a sacrifice.
Kevin Karstetter followed with a walk, putting runners on the corners.
Designated hitter Christian Friberg picked up two RBIs on a single to left field, making it a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the inning.
Bellefonte tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
As the game progressed the intensity rose to a nail biting pitch.
As the sixth came, Bellefonte took the lead back, setting the stage for the Little Lions to add more excitement in the top of the seventh.
With two out in the seventh, Evan Smith walked.
Two batters later, Smith was still at first with two outs.
A Bellefonte failed pick-off move put Smith on third.
Little Lions’ Liam Clark tied the contest on a soft dribbler that allowed him to reach first and score Smith.
State College held the Red Raiders, sending the game into extra innings.
But the night belonged to Bellefonte after the exciting ninth inning escapades.
