BG’s Cubbison advances to finals in the MAC Championships in 1500-meter

AKRON, Ohio – The Bowling Green Falcons completed the first day of the 2023 MAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday (May 11). Heptathletes Jenna Lucas and Destiny Fernandes had a strong start to the weekend, with both recording PRs in the high jump. Lucas added another PR in the 100 hurdles, an event that saw Fernandes place sixth. Lucas, who was the shot put runner-up, is currently fourth in the heptathlon standings. Fernandes is close behind at sixth, making the Falcons one of only two teams with multiple athletes in the top-six.

The evening session kicked off with the 1500 prelims, as Kylee Cubbison placed third to qualify for Saturday’s finals. DaMya Barker followed that with a 400 hurdles PR, missing the final qualifying spot by just 0.16 seconds. Her time of 1:01.66 ranks her eighth in school history. The next event was the 200 prelims, which saw three phenomenal Falcon efforts. Jemeila Hunter ran a PR of 23.99, ranking her second in program history and qualifying her for the finals. Tianna Mulligan ran a PR of 24.46 and will join Hunter in the finals, with Darian Braddix rounding out the group with a PR of 24.88.

Lucas continued her busy day by competing in the open javelin, throwing a PR of 115-5.00 (35.19m) to place seventh and score two team points. She now ranks ninth in program history in the event. The final event of the day was the 10K, with Elise Johnson and Regina Rose making their collegiate debuts in the race. Rose tallied team points with a sixth-place finish, while Johnson backed her with a 12th-place finish.

Falcon Facts
– Jemeila Hunter ran a 200 PR of 23.93 seconds, qualifying for the finals and ranking second in school history.

– Jenna Lucas tallied three personal records on the day. She began the day with a PR in the heptathlon’s 100 hurdles, running 15.61 to place 10th. She returned in the evening to compete in the open javelin, throwing a PR of 115-5.00 (35.19m) that ranks her ninth in program history. This gave her a seventh-place finish in the event, scoring two team points.
– In the heptathlon shot put, Lucas placed second at 41-0.00 (12.50m), the second-best mark of her career. She also ran the second-fastest 200 of her career, finishing in 26.54.
– Destiny Fernandes cleared 5-4.50(1.64m) in the heptathlon’s high jump, setting a personal record. She also ran the second-best 100 hurdles time of her career at 14.85, just 0.10 shy of her PR. Fernandes ran the third-fastest 200 of her career, finishing in 26.28 seconds.
– Kylee Cubbison qualified for the 1500 finals with a time of 4:35.51, placing third.
– DaMya Barker ran a 400 hurdles PR of 1:01.66, which ranks her eighth in program history.
– Elise Johnson ran her first career 10K, placing 12th at 38:58.19.
– Izzy Best made her MAC Outdoor Championship debut and ran the second-best 1500 of the season (4:42.67).
