Brownstead leads State College dominance in swimming in D6 championships

UNIVERSITY PARK – State College’s returning state champion Matt Brownstead put on quite a show on Friday in the first day of District 6 swimming competition at Penn State’s McCoy Natatorium.

The Little Lion senior took the two events he was in plus added a new District 6 record in the District 6 Class AAA 50-yard freestyle with a record time of 19.84. He topped his previous meet record of 20.07.

His brother John took the top spot in the 200-yard freestyle with a season best 1:45.56. He also won the 100-yard backstroke.

State College would continue to dominate the first day of swimming, starting from the first race of the day until the end of the competition.

In the girls 200-yard medley, the Little Lady Lions team consisting of Jade Castro, Mackenzie Pagett, Madelyn Koehle and Abbey Whipple finished with a top time of 1:47.35.

The boys also finished first as the team composed of Zachary Lambert, Foster Heasley, Garrick Zheng and Brownstead 1:35.84.

In the girls 200-yard freestyle, the Little Lions finish fist and second as Colleen Adams and Megan Doucette with times of 1:53.64 and 1:58.16, respectively.

State College also finished 1-2 in the 200-yard IM as freshman Jade Castro topped teammate Madelyn Kohle by a 2:07.14 to 2:07.66 margin.

In the boys 200-yard IM, the Little Lions swept the first three spots. Leading the way was Foster Heasley with a time of 1:56.16.

He also notched a win in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Finishing second was Zheng with a time of 2:01.12. Rounding out the top three was Zach Lambert who posted a time of 2:02.03.

Zheng also posted a second place finish in the boys 100-yard butterfly with a mark of 53.05.

The 50-yard freestyle also belonged to State College.

Abby Whipple topped the the charts with a time 24.36.

Teammate Alle Koehle finished third 25.58.

Finishing second to Brownstead in the 50-yard freestyle was teammate Will Ulmer with a time of 22.56.

Ty Uhlig won the 500-yard freestyle.

The Lady Little Lions swimmers dominated the 100-yard freestyle as well led by Mackenzie Pagett with a winning mark of 58.97.

A close second on the night, teammate Lily Bang finished with a 59.42 finish while Sarah Ambrose rounded out the top three with a time of 1:01.38.

The girls rounded out the day with the way they started with a win.

The 200-yard medley team consisting of Grace Kauffman, Becca Montgomery, Grace Tate and Rachel King with a time of 1:42:07.

The boys also finished with the win. State College’s group of Foster Heasley, Brownstead, Will Ulmer and John Brownstead.

The Little Lions will look to add to its  medal count Saturday in the second day of action.
