Burnham tops Kish in Midget Championship

By Kenny Varner

LEWISTOWN – Riding high on an undefeated streak.

The Burnham Bulldogs completed perfection Sunday night as they outlasted a relentless Kish team 26-6 in the the Central Keystone Football and Cheer League’s Midget Championship game held at Mitchell Field.

This season’s biggest rivalry in the Central Keystone and Cheer League this season was the Indians and Bulldogs Midget teams.

During the regular season, the Indians was the only team to score on the Bulldogs all season.

That was even made more intense as the Bulldogs came back from a 18-0 to narrowly win by 10.

Fast forward two weeks later, the two met again for the Championship and the right to be called the best of the best.

“I couldn’t be any more prouder of how they came out. A few weeks ago we were down to them 18-0 and we came back to beat them 28-18 and it just wasn’t happening today,” said Burnham Coach Anthony Everly. “It’s great to play against them. It’s always great competition.”

Burnham took advantage a big special teams play to score on its first possession.

After holding Kish at bay on their first possession, the Bulldogs blocked the punt and it was caught in the air by Caden Breon.

Breon ran the ball down to the 39, giving his team good field position to start the game.

Burnham slowly worked its way downfield moving it to the Kish two.

From there Carter Johns took it in from 2-yards out for the touchdown, making it a 6-0 contest.

Defensively, the Bulldogs came out and made an early impact in the game.

On the Indians’ second possession, Burnham clamped down and forced another punt.

The Bulldogs got the ball at the 50-yard line and started another march downfield looking for more.

It took seven plays this time but the Bulldogs found their way back into the end zone.

Preston Earnest got the call and made the most of it. He took the ball and blazed his way down for the 32-yard touchdown runs, again the Indians held on the Burnham extra point, making it a 12-0 contest.

The Bulldogs opportunistic defense came to the forefront on the Indians next drive as Luke Bender intercepted the ball and took the ball down to the 36.

Three plays later, Bender hooked up with Dominique Siennick for a 35-yard touchdown pass with 4:22 left in the first half.

The teams would head into the intermission with Burnham holding a 20-point advantage.

Coming out of the break, the Indians were looking for a break they could use to get back into the game.

But both defenses dominated play in the third as neither team was able to put one in the end zone.

But midway through the fourth, Kish got on the scoreboard.

On the 7th play of the drive, the Indians scored on a Jaxon Strohecker who blasted his way into the end zone on a 4-yard TD.

However, the extra point was stopped by the Bulldogs, 26-6.

“This is the only team that competed with us this year. We haven’t lost to anybody but these guys (Bulldogs). They are a good club. They have a lot of good ball players and they are coached really well,” said Kish Coach Reed Henderson. “We had a pretty good battle with them at their field and came up short up there. They were just the better team tonight.”

Kish didn’t get very much time to celebrate as on the next play the Bulldog added more points to the scoreboard.

Earnest got free on the kick off and blazed his way for the 80-yard TD kick return.

From there, the Bulldogs were able to keep the Indians from any kind of threatening drive, winning 26-6.
