MILL HALL – The Williamsport Millionaires girls basketball team played spoiler to the Central Mountain Senior night festivities as Williamsport took the contest 50-38 Thursday at the Central Mountain High School gym.

But not before the Wildcats made a late run to pull within four midway through the fourth quarter.

“I thought for the most part we played hard. Early in the first quarter we were a little bit timid trying to figure out how to play against that size. They were pretty quick so we were trying to figure some things out there,” said Central Mountain coach Scott Baker. “But. I thought we settled in well and I didn’t think our effort was bad. I thought we turned the ball over too much and we went back to shooting too many threes. When you combine those things you give them too many opportunities and with their rebounding we really got hurt there. So that was pretty much it.”

One of the bright spots on the night for Central Mountain was the all around effort by Quinnlynn McCann. McCann was everywhere on the court, posting four triples, pulling down key rebounds, collecting steals. She finished with 23 points on the night.

She was helped from beyond the arc by Mia Kopysciansky who notched two treys of her despite the loss.

Williamsport was led by the inside efforts of Sophia Erb and Samlyah Little who posted a 17-point and a 14-point effort, respectively.

Coming out of the intermission, the Wildcats were trailing by just nine points, 29-20.

Erb helped extend the lead, posting the first five points of the quarter, both shots were runners in the lane.

On her second shot, she was hacked in the act of shooting and was given a chance for a 3-point play. With the bucket, the Millionaires upped their lead to 34-20.

But in the next Central Mountain possession, Kopysciansky hit a triple, taking the lead back to 11.

But Erb was strong to the hoop as she once again scored down inside to put the lead up to 13 with 3:27 left in the period.

McCann helped her team get right back in it, leading the Wildcats on a 6-2 run to end the period. McCann has four points in the run while Reese Doyle hit 2-of-2 from the line, sending the Wildcats into the final stanza, trailing 38-30.

In the fourth, Little got her team going hitting an inside shot off an offensive rebound, putting the game at a 10-point Millionaires advantage.

But the Wildcats wouldn’t go down without a fight as they got six consecutive points by McCann to cut the lead to 40-36.

Height was a problem all night for the Wildcats as they weren’t able to pull down second shot opportunities or stop the strong Millionaires inside game late as they went on a 10-2 run to put the game out of reach and on to the victory.

In the JV game, Williamsport also notched a win, 39-22.

Before the game, the Wildcats honored Mac Walsh, Lauryn Haines, Faith Carter and manager Maddy Smith.
