Centre and MIfflin County well represented on stands at PIAA wrestling championships

By BRIAN CARSON

HERSHEYNine area wrestlers achieved their goal of making it to the podium and earning a medal at the PIAA Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey on Saturday.

In Class AAA, State College’s Pierson Manville (139) and Nick Pavlechko (285) placed second, Asher Cunningham (145) took fourth, and Hayden Cunningham (127) was fifth. The Little Lions finished fourth in the team race with 75 points.

Mifflin County’s Hunter Johnson blazed through the consolations on Saturday to finish third at 121 pounds,

In Class AA, Bald Eagle Area received a fourth from Coen Bainey (127) and two fifths from Lucas Fye (121) and Caleb Close (172).

Ty Watson of Penns Valley earned his medal by placing sixth at 152 pounds.

Wrestlers competing at Hershey but not earning medals were Mifflin County’s Parker Kearns (152), Avery Aurand (172), and Peyton Kearns (285), along with Carter Weaverling (172) for State College.

In Class AA, Penns Valley’s Colten Shunk (133) and Kollin Brungart (215); Juniata’s Taylor Smith (139), Bellefonte’s Gage Long (145), and Philipsburg-Osceola’s Caleb Hummel (107) were eliminated in consolations.

Manville faced Bethlehem Catholic’s, Kollin Rath. In mid-January, they met in the Escape the Rock finals, with Rath getting a 3-1 win.

In the state finals, Rath used a takedown and reversal in the second period to pick up the 4-2 win. Manville was the defending champion at 139 pounds.

Making his first appearance in the finals, Pavlechko had the unlucky task of facing returning state champion Sean Kinney of Nazareth.

Kinney scored a takedown with just four ticks on the clock for a 2-0 lead after one. Kinney, a hulk of a young man, escaped and scored a takedown in the second for a 5-0 lead. A takedown in the third gave the Blue Eagle the 7-0 win and his second state title.

Asher Cunningham dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Central Dauphin’s Matt Repos in the consolation finals. Repos had an escape late in the second. Asher came close to a takedown in the third period during a scramble situation but ran out of time.

Older brother Hayden defeated Hempfield’s Seamus Mack 7-4 for fifth. Hayden had a takedown in the first, a reversal and takedown in the second, and an escape in the third for the victory.

Johnson roared through the consolations, wrestling in a free, relaxed style with a ton of confidence.

He started the day with a 9-5 decision over Ryan Klingensmith of Kiski Area in the consolation quarterfinals. Johnson followed that up with an injury default victory in 2:21 over Warwick’s Marco Tocci. Johnson had a 3-0 lead at the time of the injury.

Johnson left no doubt who would win in the match for third. A takedown and two-point nearfall in the first, two back in the second, and a decisive takedown in the third gave him the 8-2 victory.

On his way to third, Hunter defeated two future Division I wrestlers in Tocci (North Carolina) and Joling (Davidson).

Bainey was up 3-0 on Hayden Yacoviello-Andrus of Bermudian Springs when he grabbed his knee and had to default in 2:28. The Eagle senior was a three-time state placer.

Fye won his second medal with a 3-1 win over Saucon Valley’s Aiden Grogg. Fye made a takedown in the first and an escape in the third hold up for the victory.

Close came away with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bishop McDevitt’s Lucas Lawler. The Eagle junior escaped in the second and rode out Lawler in the third.

Watson earned his second consecutive sixth-place finish, dropping a 5-1 decision to Saucon Valley’s Liam Scrivanich. The Ram junior held a 1-0 advantage into the third before Scrivanich escaped and hit a four-point move to send Watson into defeat.

Bethlehem Catholic won the AAA title. Faith Christian claimed the AA championship.
