Day 2: Ultimate Warrior crowns Two MC champions

By BRIAN CARSON

ALLPORTMifflin County crowned two champions and had seven medalists to lead the area contingent at the Ultimate Warrior Tournament on Saturday.

The Huskies, Bald Eagle Area, Philipsburg-Osceola, and Juniata combined for 14 medal winners at the two-day event.

Hunter Johnson (121) and Deakon Schaeffer (160) captured gold for the Huskies. Parker Kearns (152) took second, Peyton Kearns (285) placed fifth, Jacob Cunningham (145) sixth, Kamden Everly (127) seventh, and Blake Aumiller (133) finished eighth.

Mifflin County capped off an impressive weekend, scoring 152.5 points to finish second in the team race behind Central Mountain, who had three champions and 174 points.

Johnson dominated his weight class, outscoring his opponents 45-4. In the finals, the Husky senior scored a takedown and two-point nearfall in the first, a reversal in the second, and an escape and takedown in the third. Johnson controlled the match with a tough, tight waste and arm bar combo.

Schaeffer was slow and steady in his march through the tournament. The Husky junior defeated the top seed in the semifinals and then beat Vito Gentile of Reynolds in the finals, 5-3. Schaeffer had a takedown in the second and third periodswhile only surrendering three escapes.

Parker Kearns battled fifth-ranked Luke Sipes of Altoona to a 1-1 draw through regulation. Sipes got the advantage late in sudden victory when the Mountain Lion sophomore locked up a cradle during a scramble and got the fall in 6:59 to win the title at 152.

In the battle of one versus two at 127 pounds, two beat one as Bentworth’s Chris Vargo turned BEAs Coen Bainey and got the pin in 3:50. Vargo had a 2-0 lead after one. Bainey chose bottom for period two, and Vargo took advantage.

The Eagles also had a third place from Caleb Close at 172. The Eagle sophomore lost 1-0 to Jalen Wagner of Reynolds in the semifinals before battling back by defeating Tyrone’s Kyle Scott 3-1 for third.

BEA also had a seventh from Gage Gardner (215) and an eighth place from Mason Reese (145) to finish ninth with 92.5 points.

Marcus Gable took fourth at 152, and Caleb Hummel was seventh at 107 to lead P-O. The Mounties collected 50 points and placed 24th out of 41 teams.

The injury-depleted Indians brought only eight wrestlers to the tournament, led by Taylor Smith, who placed seventh at 139. Juniata scored 28 points to finish 34th.
