EJ girls notch overtime victory

COCOLAMUS – The East Juniata girls soccer team showed that they brought a “Never say Die!” attitude into their Saturday contest against Central Columbia.
After picking up the first goal of the game, East Juniata saw its lead taken away minutes later by the Central Columbia offense.
However, neither team was able to place one behind the goalkeeper the rest of the regulation period and even in the first overtime things were neck-in-neck but in the Tigers were able to finish things out when Hailey Swartz, a Junior hit the game winner at the 86:31 minute of the game to give her team the win via the unassisted goal, winning 2-1.
The Tigers got started when Hailey Swartz, a junior, tickled the twine at 39:40 thanks to an assist by freshman Kierstyn Fogle l, making it 1-0.
Central Columbia knotted things at one when Lauren Bull smashed one through at 37:20, thanks to an assist by Gracia Eckenrode off a corner kick.
“We struggled in the first half to connect passes and create chances. We regrouped at half time and came out much stronger and ready to play,” said East Juniata head coach Valeria Dressler. “I am very proud of the girls for finding their second wind and pulling off their first win to their season.”
Shots on goals were dominated by East Juniata by a 23-9 margin. The Tigers also held the advantage on corners by leading 6-4.
East Juniata goalie Lily Sankey had a strong showing finishing with an 8-save performance while Central Columbia’s Allie Swisher tallied 21 in a losing effort
East Juniata’s Overall record stands at 1-1.
Next up for the Tigers is on Monday 9-11-17 at Line Mountain (TVL league game) starting at 4:00pm.
