End of a magical season; MC13s fall in semis to West End

ALTOONA – The Mifflin County 13-year old Babe Ruth baseball teams impressive magical run came to an end Thursday night as it fell to West End 5-2 in the Mid-Atlantic Semi Final contest.

But the run was not without building a successful resume along the way, highlighting things was a Babe Ruth State title.

During the contest, the game had its share of excitement which included a 30-minute lighting malfunction that left the outfield lights out.

Picking up the win was hurler Makai Day. Day went 6 2/3 innings for the win, allowing five hits, two runs and struck out four.

Xavier Smith took the loss, giving up four runs and six hits while striking out two.

Trevor Sheaffer led the Mifflin County offense with a 2-for-2 effort .

Mifflin County, who hit the ball hard but right to the other team most of the evening, got hits from Caden Wolfley, Deakon Schaeffer and Ryan Hine.

West End’s Cole Shuler led his team’s offense with a 3-for-4 effort with 3RBIs. Teammate Tyler Gee also posted a 3-for-4 night with two doubles.

In the top of the first, West End got things started by posting a 2-run inning.

Day, led off the game reaching on a MC miscue. Gee followed with a single.

Caden Robertson took on for the team as he was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with no one out.

Mifflin County quickly recovered as Deacon Brown bounced into a double play.

However, West End was able to score Day on the play, making it 1-0.

Cole Shuler brought Gee home on a double to deep center adding another run to the lead.

But Mifflin County refused to give up, cutting the lead in half in the bottom of the third.

With two out, Schaeffer singled to get things going. He stole second and then scored on an RBI single to right center, cutting it to 2-1.

Mifflin County tied things in the fourth, thanks to three infield errors

allowing Ryan Kanagy to score.

He moved from first to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sheaffer. He later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tucker Gill.

Unfortunately, West End got back on the winners side in the fifth, posting two runs on two doubles, capturing a 4-2 advantage.

In the seventh, West End added an insurance run and the Mifflin County offense ran out of gas this ending its season.

But it was a season of milestones, clutch hits, strong pitching and defensive efforts that have been a staple of the Mifflin County All-Star’s legendary program.

It was quite a run!!
