Gaffney to take the helm of MC boys basketball program

Mifflin County is excited to introduce the hiring of new Head Boy’s Basketball Coach, Mr. Scott Gaffey.  Mr. Gaffey has accepted a position as an elementary special education teacher within the Mifflin County School District.

Scott Gaffey graduated Magna Cum Laude from St. Bonaventure University in 2018 with a B.S. in Elementary, Early Childhood, and Special Education. He completed his student teaching at Portville Central School in New York State.

Scott graduated from Harrisburg Christian School in 2014. During his playing career at Harrisburg Christian he was a team captain his junior and senior year, and scored 636 career points and finished with 109 3 pointers in two seasons. Gaffey was also named Patriot News “Big 15” Honorable Mention in 2013 and 2014, as well as being named CCAC Honorable Mention in 2013 and 2014. He also helped lead Harrisburg Christian to their first ever P.I.A.A State Tournament appearance in 2013.

Over the past 4 years Scott has served as a Varsity Assistant for three different basketball programs, Bishop McDevitt, Manheim Central, and Portville Central School. In 2015 as a Varsity Assistant at Bishop McDevitt he helped lead the school to a District 3 AAA Final’s appearance, as well as helping them reach the P.I.A.A Elite 8. In his two years as a Varsity Assistant at Manheim Central he helped them compile a record of 34 wins and 17 losses, as well as helping lead them to the P.I.A.A State Playoffs in 2017 and Co-Section 2 Lancaster Lebanon League Champions in 2017. Most recently Scott served as the Varsity Assistant at Portville Central School in New York where he completed his student teaching. Scott has also worked basketball camps at two division 1 programs with St. Bonaventure University and Michigan State University. In 2014 he was the youngest staff member at Michigan State’s basketball camp at the age of 19.

Scott also comes from a family with rich coaching tradition. His Grandfather, Bill Gaffey, led Bishop Guilfoyle and Susquehanna Township to State Championships in 1967 and 1980 respectively. His Father, Mike Gaffey, is currently the head coach at Bishop McDevitt High School and has won two P.I.A.A District Championships, one in 1996 as the coach at Palmyra High School, and most recently in 2015 as the coach at Bishop McDevitt.

Scott Gaffey – “I am extremely excited about taking over the Boys’ Basketball Program at Mifflin County and having the opportunity to coach in the Mid Penn Commonwealth, often regarded as the best high school basketball conference in all of Pennsylvania.  I know that playing in the Commonwealth Division there is no such thing as an “easy” game and that in order to compete at that level we will have to be well prepared and focused every night out.  I am excited to work with the student-athletes of Mifflin County High School and think we can build a future together.”

Mr. Scott Gaffey will bring a distinct passion and commitment to Mifflin County Boys Basketball.  He has a clear vision for the program will guide the program far into the future.  The parents, players and media are invited to meet Mr. Gaffey on Wednesday, August 8th at Mifflin County High School at 5:30 pm.
