Homecoming delight; Bald Eagle Area tops Bellefonte in annual rivalry game

WINGATE – Defense wins championships.

Friday night in their annual rivalry game Bald Eagle Area took control early and never looked back as they defeated Bellefonte 48-0 on homecoming.

Defensively, the Eagles stymied the Raiders offense, holding them to under 50 yards total offense.

Bald Eagle received to start off the game and the Eagles wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.

Starting at their 22, it took just three plays for Bald Eagle to score.

Quarterback Carson Nagle found Elliot Splain on a 32-yard hook up, making it a 7-0 lead with 10:32 left in the first.

Bellefonte was forced into a three and out.

The Raiders defense held tough on two consecutive offensive drives of the Eagles.

However, with 1:46 left in the opening period, Bald Eagle Area added to its lead when running back Garrett Burns got free into the secondary and blazed his way into the end zone for the 46-yard run, upping the score to 14-0.

Again, both defenses kept the other ones off balanced and off the scoreboard.

But the Eagles had one last chance to add to its lead as it went into the intermission.

With only 2-minutes and change left in the half, Nagle found Camron Watkins in the end zone for the 8-yard touchdown hook up, giving his team the 21-0 advantage going into the halftime.

Coming out of the half, things started out bad for the Bellefonte offense as it was intercepted by Ethan Koleno.

With the ball at the 35, the Eagles used only six plays to pad their lead to 28-0.

Burns once again got loose from the line of scrimmage and blasted his way in from 20-yards out, making it 28-point  advantage.

With the ball for the second time, the Raiders drive fizzled at three and out once again, this time Gavin Eckley took the punt and scored on a 43-yard punt return and sent the game into Mercy Rule status.

The two teams went into the final stanza at 35-0.

With the clock ticking away in the fourth, the Wagles once again drove the ball down into the Raiders territory. This time they gave the ball to Quintin Bennett, a lineman, scoring in the likes of the Refrigerator Perry from the 1980’s. He broke through and scored from 3-yards out. Upping it to a 42-0 contest.

Late in the contest, the Eagles would score again, this time it would be a 16-yard jaunt by Cameron Dubbs to finish the scoring and giving the fans something else to celebrate on Homecoming.
