WINGATE – They battled to the very end.
Despite playing on of the top teams of the Mountain League, the Bald Eagles girls’ soccer team weren’t intimidated one bit as its defense frustrated Huntingdon for most of the night Monday.
With time running down below the 10-minute mark, the Bearcats’ Kylie Glorioso took the left outside lane and sent it across to the top right corner, over the outstretched hand of Bald Eagle goalie Charlotte Harris.
Harris was phenomenal in goal on the evening as she collected 12 saves in an active 80-minutes of play.
With the opening possession, Huntingdon collapsed the playing field to just the Bald Eagle half for most of the game.
“We’re a good defensive team. We had just one breakdown and that was it,” said Bald Eagle coach Jared Moore. “But that’s soccer. It happens so far. It could have went the other way but unlucky for us it didn’t.”
In the first half, despite being pushed down in its own back-third, Bald Eagle got some breakaway opportunities from Addison Proctor. However, the Eagles were t able to find an open crease in the Huntingdon defense to get a good look at the goal.
Neither could Huntingdon as they pressed the back line of the Bald Eagle defense but they were sent back frustrated on numerous occasions in the first half.
Despite being outshot 11-3 in the first half, the Eagles and Bearcats remained tied through the first 40 minutes.
Harris had eight saves while Huntingdon goalie Caty Shultz had two.
Once the buzzer sounded in the second, the tempo slowed down to a snails pace as the two team’s defenses were on high alert and clamped down tight.
In the second, the two could only get one shot on goal in 26-minutes as the game remained tied.
As the teams went under the 10-minute mark, it looked as if who would ever get the first goal would win the contest.
After taking the ball on an inbounds pass on the far left side, Glorioso picked up the ball and blazed the ball down the left side and drew out the Bald Eagle Area goalie and hit the top corner, putting her team up 1-0 with 8:45 left in the contest.
From there, the Huntingdon defense was able to keep the Bald Eagle offense at bay and supplied its offense for three more shots on goals in the final minutes.
That would be all visitors needed as it held onto the win and collected their eighth win of the year.
