Juniata boys tops TVL foe Millersburg

MIFFLINTOWN – They say patience is a virtue, it certainly was for Juniata in its 49-31 victory over rival Millersburg in Tri-Valley League boys basketball action Monday night.

Juniata showcased its patience against Millersburg right away as the Indians were not going for quick shots and were moving the ball around trying to find a hole in the Millersburg defense. The same could be said for Millersburg as it too was showing great ball movement and looking for the best shot possible against the Juniata defense. Things were pretty even shot wise between both teams throughout the first quarter as the score was 8-7. But late in the first, Jacob Condo found himself wide open in the corner and knocked down a big time three to put Juniata ahead 11-7 at the end of the period.

That three ball by Condo seemed to energize Juniata even more going into the second quarter as much like in the first quarter, Juniata got contributions from five different players. Millersburg also was keeping the ball moving as well. The only difference was Juniata was dropping its shots which gave Juniata a 25-17 lead into halftime.

The ball movement continued for Juniata in the third quarter as again, Juniata looked for the open man, and that man was Max Lauver who just went off offensively in the period. Lauver was just knocking down three after three and helped to extend the Juniata lead over Millersburg. Lauver scored nine of the 14 total points scored for Juniata in the frame.

The fourth quarter became the Condo show as Condo scored eight of the 10 points scored in the quarter. One highlight play that Condo gave to the Juniata fan base was when Millersburg looked to go on a fast-break and had a lay-up in sight, that was until Condo hustled down from one end of the court to the other which ended the break with a chase down block.

Fun fact, all five Juniata starters in Condo, Lauver, Austin Derr, GG Ortiz and Evan Leach each scored four or more points for the evening.

But it was Condo and Lauver who led the Juniata offense as Condo scored a game high of 17 points. Meanwhile Lauver added another 14 points for the game.

Defensively Juniata kept the Millersburg offense in check in the fourth quarter only allowing four points for the final quarter of the game. All of those points scored for Millersburg was made by Jayden Kintzer.

Juniata is now (9-6) and will look to keep the winning ways going on Thursday as the Indians will travel to battle it out with Halifax.
