Juniata/East Juniata track teams split meet

COCOLAMUS -Nothing brings out the best in a athlete than competing against a close rival.

The best came out Thursday for both the East Juniata and Juniata track teams as they battled in a TVL match up between the best of the best in Juniata County.

“It was nice. I knew they ( the East Juniata boys) had it in them. Things lined up for us tonight,” said East Juniata coach Johnna Kratzer. “I thought long and hard and pieced together the best line up and that’s what I put out there. They did everything I asked and then some.”

Times and personal records were the results as the two team split.

East Juniata’s boys team won for the first time since 2013, topping Juniata 101-40.

The Indians took the girls side, winning 96 1/2 – 44 1/2.

On the boys side, East Juniata started off the day on the right foot, taking the 3200-meter relay with a time of 9:32.

EJ’s Rowan Smith and Coy Shaffer finished first and second in the 110-meter hurdles with times of 16.4 and 17.7, respectively.

Juniata’s Charlie Barton finished third with a time of 18.2.

Ethan Roe took the third event in-a-row for the Tigers in the 100-meter run with a top spot of 11.9.

The Indians’ Ty Shellenberger was a close second with a time of 12.1.

East Juniata continued its winning mark as it finished first in the 400-meter relay.

The team of Roe, Gannon Ryan, Smith and Shaffer finished with a mark of 48:03.

Caleb Seeger put the Tigers back in the winners spot, taking the 400-meter run with a time of 55.2.

Shellenberger gave his team a second finishing with a time of 55.6.

Seeger also topped the list in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.5 while Shellenberger placed second with a finishing mark of 25.4.

East Juniata swept the 300-meter hurdles as Smith and Shaffer again took one and two with marks of 43.8 and 45.9. Rounding out the Tigers sweep was Joe Book with a finishing time of 48.3.

In the 800-meter run, Juniata notched its first first place finish when James Hazard finished with a top time of 2:14.

East Juniata’s Brody Powell placed second, finishing at 2:16.

Logan Strawser finished first in the 3200-meter run to give East Juniata yet another victory. He finished with a mark of 10:53.

Rounding out the Tigers sweep of the event were Tim Kelly and Carter Freed.

East Juniata completed the sweep in the relays, taking the 1600-meter relay with a time of 4:01.

In the field events, the Tigers again notched another sweep as Jake Brackbill finished with a throw of 136’ 2” while teammate Seeger clinched second with a launch of 135’0”.

Rounding out the top three was Ashton Imes who threw for a distance of 119’ 2 1/2”.

Brackbill also took the shot put with a top throw of 36’ 5”.

Following behind Brackbill was Juniata’s Zach Hart who threw for a distance of 35’ 4”.

East Juniata continued to roll, taking the long jump. Roe leaped to a winning jump of 17’ 2 1/4”.

The Indians had to settle again for a second place when Brant Walters finished his best with a 17’0” jump.

Smith took the high jump as he had the right stuff capturing a lunge of 5’ 6” while Juniata captured second thanks to a leap of 5’ 4” by Mikih Hunt.

Stuart Dare gave the Indians its second top win when he took the triple jump with a distance of 36’ 4”.

East Juniata’s Ryan captured a second, finishing with a best of 36’ 3 1/2”.

Rounding out the boys’ events was the discus.

Leading the way to the win was the Tigers’ Brackbill with a throw of 103’ 7” while Juniata’s Hart was next with a toss of 100’0”.

Juniata took the girls contest with numerous wins as well.

“I am really happy for our girls. We left a lot of track meets this year where the boys left winning and the girls lost,” said Juniata coach Kim Hart said. “So that was wonderful for our girls.

The Indians started out with a win in the 3200 relay with a time of 15:05.

Leading the Tigers in the 100-meter hurdles was Bri Henry with a time of 18.0.

Kierstyn Fogle paced the Indians with three first place finishes.

She took the 400 with a time of 1:06.4 and a 2:48 in the 800.

Juniata swept the 800 as teammate Emily Houtz finished second with a 2:55 while Haley Mummah rounded things out with a 3:10 effort.

In the field, Fogle took the high jump at 4’ 4”. Teammates Katie Miller and Shreya Pattel finished next with heights of 4’0”.

Juniata’s Victory Frantz was next with a finish of 19.3.

The Indians notched the win in the 300-hurdles when Amelia Smith topped the charts with a mark of 1.00. East Juniata got a third from Marin Varner with a mark of 1:01.8.

In the 100, Ashlynn Pannebaker led the way for Juniata posting a first place time of 13.2. EJ’s Leah Sankey finished in second with a time of 14.4.

Pannebaker and Sankey took first and second in the 200, finishing with times of 28.38 and

Juniata’s Emily Houtz took the 1600 and the 3200 with times of 6:48.64 and 16:23.

She was followed in both events by the Tigers’  Mummah. Mummah finished with a time of 7:07.8 in the 1600 and a mark of 16:29 in the 3200.

In the 400-meter relay, the Lady Indians also placed first, with a top time of 57.1.

East Juniata took the top spot in the 1600–relay with a time of 5:57.4.

The Tigers took the javelin when Cadee Becker lofted a top throw of 88’ 8 1/2”.

Finishing second was Juniata thrower Mariska Beward with a throw of 84’ 4”.

Kacey Martin led a sweep of the shot put as she tossed a top distance of 25’ 10 1/2” while the Indians teammate Ava Shearer rounded out the top three with a toss of 23’ 10”.

Kaylyn Walters took the long jump and the triple jump with leaps of 18’11” and 29’ 9”.

East Juniata’s Ravin Bassler took the discus with a top throw of 68’ 8”.
