Juniata girls captures TVL crown, Indian boys finish second

By Kenny Varner

OAK HALL – Picking up a league championship, the Juniata girls continued their spectacular march into the post season.

The Indians boys team finished second overall.

“I knew the girls would win. They just didn’t have a lot of full teams. We had five girls score,” said Juniata coach Jeff Miller. “I thought the boys put out a good effort. We fell a little short. Susquenita ran well. I give them credit. We did what we could. This is the first TVL loss we’ve had since the beginning of the our program. It was a little disappointing.”

The Juniata cross country team ventured up 322 to participate in a match hosted by Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy Tuesday.

The Tri-Valley League meet was held at the Oak Hall Park just outside of Boalsburg.

The Juniata girls were looking to keep their undefeated streak alive while the boys were looking to put another win under their belts in the cool and overcast day.

In the end, the Lady Indians finished on top over Saint Joseph’s.

Taking to the course first were the girls. The three mile course took the route through the hills of the park. As the race went into its final lap the rain had started to come down,

Coming around the last turn Saint Joseph’s Naomi Crispin with a time of 22:56 came in first followed by Juniata’s Hannah Zeiders with a second place time of 22:58. Right behind her was teammate Carolyn Heidenreich. Heidenreich finished with a mark of 23:19.

Placing sixth for Juniata was Erendira Martinez-Ramirez with a final time of 25:46.3.

Rounding out the top 10 finishers for the Indians was Ella Zimmerman who finished eighth. She finished with a time of 27:04.2.

Juniata’s Selena Mayall-Marker finished 21st with a time of 33.57.5.

The drizzle turned to a constant rain as the boys’ group started making the course slick and wet as it mixed with the downed leaves.

However, that show no effect on the racers as they took to race.

Juniata placed second in boys action. Taking the first place spot was Susquenita.

Josiah Barner led the way through the rain to a third place time of 18:29.5.

Finishing right behind Barner was Coy Kerstetter with a time of 19:03.3. Kaedmon Wagner was fifth with a mark of 19:07.5.

Rounding out the top 10 finishers for the Indians was Joel Hardin. Hardin finished eighth with a time of 19:24.

Finishing in 11th for Juniata was David Mayall -Marker posting a 20:02.3.

Rounding out the Juniata runners were Luke Weiand and John Randolph, they finished with times of 22:06.4 and 23:41.9, respectively.

Juniata will be back in action next week as they battle the Mifflin County Huskies.
