Juniata late run falls short in game against Millersburg

By Kenny Varner

MIFFLINTOWN – Despite a shutdown defensive effort in fourth quarter by the Juniata girls basketball team against Millersburg, the comeback fell just a little short as they fell 55-49 Saturday.

“I was encouraged by that. All season we have had trouble with getting second chances. We play good defense but don’t get the rebound,” said Juniata coach Mike Smith. “In the second half of the game we were doing everything that I wanted us to do so I wanted to feed the post a little more because we had the advantage inside but we are still young.

The Indians got a double-double from Ava Shearer in a losing effort.

In the opening quarter, Millersburg used its full court press to its advantage early on as it forced Juniata into numerous turnovers to take an early 16-9 first quarter advantage.

Millersburg remained the pace through the second quarter as they took a 7-point lead into the intermission.

Juniata got a spark of energy from the bench as Smith went to the bench and put in spark plug Haley Mummah.

Mummah made the most of her time on the court, picking up steals, rebounds and posting eight points on the night.

In the second half, the two teams battled back and forth as Juniata took the contest to a 6-point deficit before heading into the final stanza.

Juniata pulled the game to within two before Millersburg was able to put the game away.
