By Kenny Varner
MIFFLINTOWN – They went down firing.
Despite trailing late to the Juniata Indians in the opening round of District 6 football playoffs, the Bald Eagles fought to the very end.
In year two under head coach Jesse Nagle, the Eagles improves once again, making it to the first round of the post season.
Going up against a three-headed monster running machine in Juniata and facing rainy weather that isn’t conducive to a pass oriented offense like the Eagles, it was too tough to over come, falling 41-19.
The dedicated group never quit despite a slow start and turning the ball over eight times.
“I don’t know where to start. I think we had seven turnovers. But hats off to Juniata. They played a nice football game. They are a good football team. Good luck to them,” Bald Eagle coach Nagle said. “Unfortunately, I thought we cut ourselves short there. I think we could have played a lot better than we did, especially in the first half. Turnovers hurt us all season. The games we didn’t turn over the ball,we won.”
Juniata wasted little time taking the lead in the game as Jeremiah Parson capped off a long calculated drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. With the Chris Esh kick, the Indians led 7-0.
After keeping the Eagles’ at bay on their following possession, Juniata got the ball back once again.
Parson called his own number again minutes later as he got around and launched a pass to Ben Lauver scoring from 16-yards out, upping it to 14-0 with
three ticks left in the opening quarter.
The Eagles struck first in the second quarter, as they handed he ball off to Blake Roberts. Roberts busted his way through the line and in for the 3-yard TD run, cutting it 14-7.
But the Indians defense allowed its offense to score the next three touchdowns if the game as RJ Becker and Parson scored from 22-yards and 25-yards our, respectively.
Parson led the charge on the last scoring possession of the half, hitting Lauver once again, this time from five yards out, upping it to 35-7.
But the Eagles would cash one more in before the half, thanks to Roberts touchdown run from one out, making it 35-13 as the two went into the intermission.
With the rain continuing to fall, the defenses came up tough in the second half as both allowed just one score each as Juniata went into the 41-19 victory.
With the win, Juniata improved to 9-3 while Bald Eagle ended its season with a record of 4-7.
