Bellefonte Instant Classic: Knights take Plumbs to brink before falling in extras

BELLEFONTE – It was a game championship games are made of.

Wednesday nights game showcased quite the resume of talent on both sides.

In game number two of the three game championship series, the Knights pushed Plumbs to the brink of a game three but “the Red White and Blue” sizzled late, taking the contest 9-6 to clinch the series.

It was the second consecutive championship for Plumbs and their first consecutive title wins since 1975 and 76.

It would be a home run by Logan Gibson that would lead to a 4-run seventh inning, helping his team to the victory.

Picking up the win was Oliver Thornburg as he came in relief of starter Carson Henry.

Leading the way offensively for Plumbs was Felix Oquendo who went 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Thornburg helped his cause finishing the night with a 2-for-3 night at the plate with an RBI and four runs scored.

Wyatt Hackett also finished with a 2-hit performance.

In the Knights rolled early as they got a 10-strike out performance by newly crowned Dylan Krunick Award winner, Cameron Lucas.

During his time on the mound Lucas also only allowed one hit.

Lucas was also hot with the bat, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Amryn Carson’s bat sizzled going a perfect 3-for-3 on the afternoon with an RBI and two runs scored.

Madison Miller went 2-for-3 from the plate with 2RBIs and a run scored.

Others getting hits were Caine Capparelle, Gavin Chalfa and Brady Tomco.

With the game tied going into the top of seventh, the tie did not stay very long.

Gibson took a pitch and blasted a shot that went over the fence, making it a 6-5 advantage.

With one out, Hackett singled up the middle.

Grady Krout followed with a walk.

Thornburg hit a shot into shallow right, scoring Hackett on the play.

Henry followed with a sacrifice fly that would score both Krout and Thornburg to up their lead to 9-5.

The Knights battled back in the bottom taking their last shot at a comeback.

Miller started things off when she was hit by a Thornburg pitch.

She was replaced on the base paths by pinch runner Aiden Swentosky.

Capparelle joined him on the base paths with a single to right, putting runners on the corners.

Gavin Lucas roped an RBI double, plating Swentosky and moved Capparelle to third.

However, the Plumbs defense stiffened and kept the Knights from adding anymore runs to their comeback attempt.

Early on, the Plumbs got on board first on a walk by Thornburg and three stolen bases to plate fifth run.

But the bats would start early for the Knights as they scored three in the bottom of the first.

Lucas started things off with a single.

He moved to third on a Carson RBI double to right center.

Both later scored thanks to a Chalfa  double that posted 2RBIs in the process, taking the lead at 2-1.

Miller hit an opposite field single that would score a hustling Chalfa.

Going into the second, the Knights held the advantage 3-1.

Plumbs cut it to one in the third on an RBI single by Oquendo who scored Thornburg.

But the Knights added that run back in the bottom of the inning on another RBI single by Miller.

The Knights added another run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 5-2 advantage going into the fifth.

In the final two innings, Plumbs got the bats going, tying the game in their final at bats to send the game into extras.

From there, they cane through and took the contest as the celebration began.

However, it was evident to everyone that walked off the field that both teams left everything they had on the field and that’s what makes a champion.
