Lady Huskies provide relentless defense but falls to Wildcats

LEWISTOWN – Despite being vastly outnumbered by a very veteran Mechanicsburg squad, the MIfflin County girls soccer team held their own for most of the contest before falling to the Wildcats in a 3-0 contest Saturday.

MIfflin County goalie Bailey McNitt showed her tireless prowess throughout the contest thrwarting numerous runs by the Wildcats, finishing with 14 saves.

Also providing strong efforts that might go unnoticed was the Lady Huskies back-third. When asked to step up the group of Kristin Milliron, Bryn Kanagy, Gabi Clark and Kaitlyn Bickhart frustrated the Mechanicsburg offense for much of the afternoon.

“The defensive effort was strong. We gave up two there in the second half in a minute. We don’t like to give up goals like that but the effort was there all over the field tonight,” said MIfflin County coach Barrett Knepp.

After a quick goal by Mechanicsburg’s Halle Engle on the first shot of the game, the Huskies settled in and battled despite the ball being in the Huskies defensive end for much of the half.

The Wildcats used its bigger roster to change their substitutes in shifts, trying to wear down the smaller roster of MIfflin County.

Despite the Wildcats best effort, they could not penetrate the Huskies goal for a second time in the first half.

Despite out shot 10-2 in the opening half, MIfflin County was still within striking distance trailing only 1-0.

McNitt had numerous of clutch saves, blocked shots and forced unsuccessful breakaways.

But as the game progressed, injuries the Huskies were getting wore down.

With 16:48 left in the contest, Engle broke through another time, putting her team up by a 2-0 margin.

Less than a minute later, Lily Eckroth gave her team the insurance goal they needed.

Despite battling to the final buzzer, the Lady Huskies offense wasn’t able to make a comeback.

But the effort was there for MIfflin County on the afternoon but not enough against the Wildcats.
