Lady Indians survive in thriller against rival Tigers

MIFFLINTOWN — Late heroics from Haley Mummah carried Juniata past its cross county rival East Juniata, 28-27, in a Tri-Valley League girls basketball game on Friday.

The fourth quarter could only be described as the wild west. Especially within the final minute of the game. The score was tied at 25 apiece before Mariska Beward got onto the foul line and knocked down a free throw to put Juniata up 26-25.

However seconds later, Grace Hibbs nailed a mid-range shot to put the Tigers up 27-26.

But then that was when Mummah who was scoreless for the whole game at this point of the night. Had driven into the lane and was fouled. Mummah shrugged off the pressure and dropped both shots from the line which ended up being the game winner.

However East Juniata was not going away quietly as with mere seconds remaining, the Tigers were pressuring offensively but failed to convert the shot as time expired.

Those free throws were the only two points in the game for Mummah.

The fourth quarter was the most scoring that either team did for the whole game. In fact, East Juniata scored more points in the fourth quarter than it did for the first three quarters of the game, which was 13. Juniata as a team scored a total of 12 points in the final period.

For the Tigers, they were led by the duo of Hibbs who scored all eight of her points in the fourth quarter. As well as Cadee Becker who also scored eight for the evening.

For the Indians, it was Regan Lowrey who led with seven points. Cora Musser and Shalelyn Armstrong each added six for the night.

East Juniata (8-12, 5-7) will host Juniata Christian on Monday. Juniata (11-10, 8-5) will travel to face Selinsgrove on Tuesday.
