PSU Altoona punches its ticket to the NCAA’s Division lll championship tournament.

Over the weekend, PSU Altoona softball battled through a tough tournament bracket and won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championship.

Leading the way for PSU Altoona were former local athletes.

Gianna Hoppel (2021 MC Grad) hit .410 on the season and was second in the conference with 48 hits.  She committed only one error in 36 games played as the starting first baseman.

Madison Peters (2021 Bald Eagle Area Grad) led the conference in wins (19) and innings pitched (154 1/3).  She was named pitcher of the week  in the AMCC on three separate occasions.

Hanna Lauck (Bellefonte 2021 grad) hit .327 for the season and led the conference in RBIs with 34.  Her bases loaded double against Mt Aloysius allowed Altoona to reach the finals.

PSU Altoona came into the tournament as the #3 seed, but after losing a game on Thursday, they won five consecutive games, including a sweep of #1 seed PSU-Behrend on Saturday.  Additionally, they were able to win those five games with only nine active players.

The tournament championship gets them an automatic entry into the NCAA Division 3 tournament that begins this Thursday.
