Masullo shines in no-hitter against fiesty MIfflin County team

By Kenny Varner

REEDSVILLE – Nittany Valley’s Adrienne Masullo stole the show Monday night as she tossed a no-hit shut out against a young MIfflin County team.

Masullo struck out 12 in the contest while walking just one.

It was a fete that not many batters see at this age group according to MIfflin County manager Seth Napikoski.

“That was a special pitcher. We haven’t seen anything like that in our majors or minors,” said Napikoski.

In the end, Nittany Valley’s early hot offensive start was too much for MIfflin County as it captured the 14-0 four-inning victory.

In the first inning, Nittany Valley patience at the plate took center stage as it manufactured seven first inning runs.

Sloan Moore opened up the game on a single.

Kylee Narehood was hit by a pitch to join Moore on base.

Payton Norfolk roped a RBI single into left.

Masullo helped her cause, loading the bases on a walk.

Abby Herr took one for the team as she was hit by a pitch, posting an RBI in the process.

With one out, teammate Riley Hoy also was hit by a MIfflin County offering as did Ella Herr, upping the score to 4-0.

Olivia Harter emptied the runners off base with a 3-RBI single, ending the inning scoring.

Masullo sent the young MIfflin County bats silent in the first, striking out the side.

Nittany Valley continued its hot hitting, posting another seven runs in the second.

The rally was highlighted by an Inside-the-Park grand slam by Moore.

Despite being down by 14, the MIfflin County squad refused to go down without a fight.

Keeping their heads held high, it’s defense held Nittany Valley scoreless in the third and forth.

MIfflin County’s only base runner was Sarah Erb and that came in the third.

Erb walked and collected two stolen bases before the third inning ended.

However, the game belonged to Masullo as she was in control as she notched double-digit strikeouts.

MIfflin County is looking to regroup and will play again and their coach believes that the girls will regroup and be ready for their next contest.

“Our first pitcher was our most experienced has pitched for 10 months. We are pretty green pitching-wise,” said Napikoski. “We have one 10-year old the rest are nine. So it was an experience for us. It was a little wake up. We have a good defense. We just have to throw strikes. We’ll get together tomorrow night and go through some stuff and keep them loose and go get after them again.”
