MC boys force OT but falls to West Perry

Mifflin County battled a tough West Perry team Thursday and took them to overtime before falling 3-2.

But it was the JV that really showed its tough defense tying the Mustangs at zero.

“We first want to say how happy we were with our very inspired JV game to start the night,” said Mifflin County assistant Todd Peters. “Our JV played a full team match and came away with a well-earned 0-0 tie, so we are very proud of everyone that started our night at Chapman Stadium with their efforts.”

Despite the loss, the Huskies coaches liked the spirited effort.

“As for the varsity match, we felt we played the game we wanted to play in our first half. We possessed the ball in their end, created chances, and were rewarded. A corner was taken, it bounced around, Mason Allen kept it alive and then Kaden Hook ran in to finish the ball 17 minutes into the match,” said Peters. “But then, with a little under 5 to go into the first half, we lost a mark coming down the middle and they made us pay to go into half 1-1. In the second half, it was up for grabs, but we had a lack of stepping to the ball that allowed them to get the second goal with 19 minutes left. Our boys continued to battle. We created corners, stretched their lines, thought we had a PK, and had a few direct kicks close to the box.”

Then, with 10:34 left, off a dangerous direct kick taken by Jace Bagrosky, the Huskies crashed the goal and finished their second of the night courtesy of Mason Allen.

“We would trade some blows with them to finish regulation, but we really thought we had the best chance to end it there,” added Peter’s. “We then controlled the start of overtime but on a quick counter they played one down into the corner, to an offside player that was not called, that then sent a ball across and they put their foot through a blister of a shot with 2:10 left in the first overtime to end it.”

“It’s just plain tough to lose the way we did, again after another OT match but I will tell you something about our boys. Our boys were down three contributing members of our varsity squad, and they didn’t make excuses, and they played their hearts out. Going forward, we want to continue to battle for those full 80 or more, like tonight,

with whatever compliment of players we have for the competitive October matches we have coming up.

Mifflin County outshot West Perry 12-9 and led in corners by opportunities 6-1.

Mifflin County collected 10 saves on the night while the Mustangs tallied 6.
