MC softball burns out their scoreboard en route to a 19-12 victory

Mifflin County 19, Cedar Cliff 12

LEWISTOWN – The Mifflin County Huskies scraped and clawed their way to victory as one big inning sealed the deal with the Huskies coming out on top for number one of the 2022 season as they defeated the Cedar Cliff Colts 19-12 in Mid-Penn Conference softball action Tuesday afternoon.

Between Mifflin County and Cedar Cliff, both teams combined for a game total of 31 runs scored for the afternoon. Those 31 runs were scored on a combined 32 hits.

The Colts were ahead 10-5 after scoring eight runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead. However, Mifflin County responded with an even bigger inning in the bottom half of the fourth. The Huskies dropped 14 runs in the frame, in fact, the Huskies went through the lineup twice in the inning. Dakota Hershberger got it started with a double to left center that brought home Arika Henry.

Then Sophie McCurdy smacked a single into center that scored both Payton McClure and Hershberger to cut the lead down to 10-8. Mackenna Yoder joined in on the fun with a single to right center bringing in both McCurdy and Riley Hine to tie the game at ten apiece.

But wait there’s more, as later on in the same inning, Mifflin County was up 13-10 and had the bases loaded and Hershberger came back for her second at-bat in the inning. On a one-one pitch, Hershberger got all of the softball and hammered it well over the left center fence to make it 17-10. The Huskies added two more runs in the frame.

Hershberger led the way offensively for Mifflin County going 3-for-5 at the plate and had five RBIs which included the grand slam and a double and scored twice in the game.

Hershberger was just one of eight Mifflin County players who had a multi hit game as Yoder, Hine, McClure, McCurdy, Henry, Sharp and Alexis O’Brien all had two or more hits for the afternoon.

Audrey Jordan got the start in the circle for the Huskies and had pitched the first three and a third innings before having to be pulled in the top of the fourth by Henry who tried to get Mifflin County out of the inning but struggled which brought back Jordan who was able to finish out the fourth inning. Jordan then later pitched in the fifth inning. Jordan collected three strikeouts and four walks while Henry had three walks.

From then, it was Madison Wolfgang who finished off the final two innings of the game only allowing one run off one hit and had three strikeouts and two walks.

Mifflin County is now (1-2, 1-2) and will look to make it two in a row on Thursday as the Huskies will host the Altoona Mountain Lions.
