McGwire launches walk off homer versus DuBois

By Kenny Varner

WINGATE – It’s going, going and gone!

With a mighty swing of the bat Bald Eagle batter McGwire Heverly looked like former Major League home run legend Mark McGwire as he sent a DuBois deep over the left centerfield fence to end the game and give the Bald Eagles a 16-6 win Friday night in the windy conditions.

It would be the second long ball hit on the day as Hayden Vaughn blasted a first inning grand slam to put his team in the lead for the first time.

After a bumpy first inning that saw him give up three runs, Bald Eagle hurler Noah Williamson regrouped and kept the DuBois batters in check, scattering three runs in the rest of the way en route to the 10-run five inning victory at Bald Eagle’s Doc Etters field.

Spotting DuBois three runs in the first, the Bald Eagle offense went right to work.

Myles Stover was hit by a pitch to start off the bottom inning.

Alex Gavlock doubled to centerfield to put runners on the corners.

Williamson also took one for the team as he was plunked a pitch, loading the bases.

Kyler Cunningham brought home Stover when he walked with the bases loaded, cutting it to 3-1.

Vaughn stepped up to the plate and sent a line shot that sailed past the fence for a grand slam home run, putting them ahead 5-3.

Heverly kept the inning going on a single that skipped down the third baseline. He later scored on a wild pitch, making it a 6-3 contest.

Defense took over in the top of the second as it turned away DuBois’ offense despite getting runners on first and third.

The Eagles added three more in the second.

Gavlock started with a single to center.

Williamson landed back on base with a single, putting runners on the corners.

Vaughn collected his fifth RBI of the game on a single of his own, scoring Gavlock.

Heverly brought in another hitter as he smashed an RBI single.

Ryan Kresovich’s sacrifice fly added the third run of the inning, upping the lead to a 9-3 advantage.

In the third inning, Bald Eagle continued its offensive attack adding five more runs upping the contest to a 14-3 lead.

DuBois battled to keep the game going in the top of the fifth to keep the game going into the bottom of the inning.

But the Eagles put the game on ice after Vaughn singled and Heverly roped the mammoth shot over the fence to end the contest and give his team the victory.
