McVeytown wins in a nail bitter!

By Joshua Yoder
MCVEYTOWN – To say that both of these teams left it all on the field, would be an incredible understatement. It went down to literally the final play of the game and in the end, it was the McVeytown Eagles who came out victorious over the Terrance Tigers by the final score of 59-54 during a CKFL Midget football game Sunday afternoon.
It didn’t take very long to for the scoring to begin with the Tigers getting on the board first. Quarterback Michael Williams launched a deep ball to Pedro Rodriguez for a 65 yard touchdown. The duo connected again to complete the two point conversion making it an 8-0 lead.
However, the Eagles responded with a big pass play of their own as they used a halfback pass from Blake Specht that landed into the arms of Treyson Yohn who then turned on the jets and went 48 yards for the score. Colt Bratton then scored the extra point to make it an 8-7 game.
Then Terrance responded right back with a big drive that ended with a one yard run into the endzone by Williams giving the Tigers a 14-7 after a failed extra point attempt.
The final score during the opening period came from the Eagles thanks to the efforts of running back Bentley Felmlee who powered his way the down the field to score a 55 yard run for the touchdown. But the extra point failed which left the score at 14-13 after one quarter of play.
The second quarter was just as crazy as the first as the Tigers managed to get the ball back after a fumble which was recovered by Ryker Herrington. Herrington came back for more as he ran for 35 yards for the touchdown. But the two point attempt had failed leaving the score at 20-13.
McVeytown answered on its next possession as Bratton hustled down the field for a 10 yard run into the endzone. Bratton then found Yohn in the endzone for two points giving the Eagles their first lead of the game at 21-20.
The lead did not last long as the Tigers answered thanks to Rodriguez went 70 yards to complete the kick return for the score. The extra point failed making it 26-21.
However that lead did not last for long either as the very next kick return, Felmlee took his turn to go 70 yards for the touchdown. But the extra point failed as McVeytown had a 27-26 lead.
Then both teams traded interceptions as Bratton got the first one before Liam Knepp jumped right in front of the pass and got an interception for the Tigers.
And it would be the Tigers who took advantage as Rodriguez punched it in and also scored the extra point giving Terrance a 33-27 lead heading into halftime.
McVeytown evened things up at the start of the third quarter as Bratton scored a three yard rushing touchdown but failed on the extra point to have the score tied at 33.
The Tigers answered again as Rodriguez went 70 yards on the ground and gave them back the lead with the score of 39-33 at the end of the third quarter.
The Eagles took back the lead at the start of the fourth quarter as Specht ran in to score a four yard touchdown. Bratton scored the extra point making it a 40-39 game.
However, a huge momentum shift happened during the kickoff as the Tigers thought that the ball was going to go out of bounds. The only problem was that the ball had stayed in bounds and Felmlee jumped all over it to give the ball back to the Eagles.
McVeytown took advantage as the Eagles got another big time play from Felmlee who went 31 yards for the touchdown making the lead 46-39.
Terrance continued to fight back as Williams found Herrington in the endzone for the score. Then Jaxson Yeater passed the ball to Herrington to get the two points and a 47-46 lead.
But with just over a minute to play, it became a shootout between both teams as Felmlee scored a 15 yard run before Specht got the extra point to give the Eagles a 53-47.
Then with 41 seconds remaining Williams found Rodriguez open and he turned on the burners and completed a 47 yard pass and then Rodriguez scored the extra point to give Terrance a 54-53 lead.
But then the big drive came from McVeytown after a big return from Felmlee. Specht then made another halfback pass which landed into the arms of Yohn who dived for the ball and landed on the seven yard line. Felmlee took over from there as he went seven yards for the score.
With 11 seconds on the clock and the Eagles having a 59-54 lead, the Tigers looked for another big time play in the air. But the ball went right into the hands of Bratton who collected his second interception of the game and put the game on ice.
Afterwards, the Eagles players wanted to dedicate the victory to their assistant coach Cole Hess.
The Terrance Tigers will look to rebound on Tuesday as they host the Burnham Bulldogs with a start time of 5:30 p.m.
McVeytown will host the Burnham Bulldogs on Sunday at 3 p.m..
Congratulations to both teams on an incredible game!
