Lewistown, (PA) –
Goose Day is rapidly approaching and Mifflin County is the hub of local Goose Day Festivities. Area residents celebrate the day in various ways. The most common is eating roast goose which is purported to bring good financial luck for the coming year. There will be a variety of activities in the area. New this year is the addition of a two day racing program at Middle Road Speedway.
Area go kart and lawn tractor racers will assemble for a night time event under newly installed lighting, at the 1/10 th mile oval Saturday September 18. Action gets under way at 6 pm. with gates opening at noon. Jennifer Rutherford Events is the presenting sponsor for both Goose Day programs. Parents are invited to accompany their children to kids activities which include sack and three legged races, bicycle and foot racing, and more. There will be giveaways and crafts for the kids. Parents can browse among vendors which include crafters.
Sunday September 19 racing starts at 2 pm. Gates open at noon. Vendors and kids activities continue for the second day.
Racers from PA and the Mid Atlantic region are expected to attend.
Area drivers recently competed in a national event sanctioned by the American Racing Mower Association at Newfoundland, PA where they fared well against  other traveling racers.
Goose Day is officially celebrated on September 29. Brought to the Juniata River Valley in 1786, Goose Day’s arrival is by an early settler from England. Legend has it that if you eat Goose on September 29, also known as St. Michaelmas Day, you will never want for money all year round. Michaelmas is a Christian Festival and in some denominations, a reference to a fourth angel, usually Uriel, is also added. The festival is observed in the Catholic Church, Angilican Communion and Lutheranism.
The Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau web-site contains a thorough listing of activities for this year’s events. They can be reached at https://jrvvisitors.com.
A kickoff event with racers from Middle Road and other area speedways will occur Thursday September 16 at Smitty’s Bar & Grill, Milroy, PA.  Race machines and drivers will be on hand as well as DJ Digital Jeremy Landes spinning your favorite tunes. This is an all age event and children are welcome to set in or on racing equipment. Smitty’s will be serving their outstanding food and beverages. Activities start at 6 pm.
