PORT MATILDA -Stand them up!
Sit them down!
That seemed to be the theme Tuesday night when two of the best young hurlers in the area met up to create a pitchers duel to beat all pitchers duel.
After a 19-1 victory on Monday over State College, the Mifflin County girls 9-10Us All-Star team took to the road to battle a scrappy Bald Eagle Area team.
On the mound, Bald Eagle pitcher Sierra Albright tossed a no-hitter, struck out 15 but failed to get the victory.
On the mound for Mifflin County was Falynn Reinard was almost as imposing as she struck out 13 and allowed just one hit in the game en route to a 1-0 shut out over the Eagles.
Picking up the game’s only win was Bald Eagles’ Alexis Yoder, that coming in her team’s last at bats.
Both teams played a strong game defensively.
Small ball proved to the deciding factor as the Mifflin County girls managed to take a late inning walk to Makenna Spickler proved to be the deciding factor in the win.
As the two teams went into the fourth tied, Spickler led off the inning with a walk and kept running after she reached First. She stretched a walk into a 2-base walk, putting her in scoring position.
She stole third and stole home on a wild pitch by Albright, making it 1-0.
Bald Eagle gave it one last shot in the team’s final at bats.
Yoder took a Reinard offering into centerfield to lead off the inning.
However, Reinard recovered quickly, striking out the next two batters.
With two outs, it would be the Mifflin County defense that provide the biggest play of the game.
Yoder attempted to steal second and the ball was overthrown into the outfield. Yoder attempted to stretch it to third. The throw to third baseman Jolee Bodtorf was right on line and Yoder was gunned down at third to end the contest.
