Mount Union to battle Penns Valley in D6 championship; tops Claysburg -Kimmel
Though things started off a little slow, the Mount Union Trojans managed to right the ship and power past the Claysburg-Kimmel Bulldogs by the final score of 8-3 in the District 6 Class 2A softball semi-finals.
It looked as though Mount Union’s pitcher Karrigan Woodward would have had an easy first inning in the top of the first inning getting the first two outs of the game on just two pitches.
But then Harleigh Cavender came to the plate and on her second pitch at the at-bat, hammered one deep to left center well over the fence to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
A few innings went by but in the bottom half of the third inning, things finally got going for the Trojans on offense as Kaitlyn Arnold got the ball rolling with a double to left that brought home Morgan Brumbaugh to even the game at one apiece.
Later on in the inning, Kayshawna Spriggs then reached base on an error while Arnold was able to score. Spriggs later scored on a fielder’s choice by Kendra Gardner making it 3-1 Mount Union lead.
However, the Bulldogs added two more runs in the top half of the fourth taking advantage of a pair of Mount Union errors leading to the game being at three apiece.
But the Trojans did not falter and used it as fuel to power the bats in the bottom of the fourth with Kadyn Crisswell and Woodward each jacked back to back home runs over the left field fence making it a 5-3 Trojan lead.
The Trojans then put the game on ice in the bottom of the sixth as Crisswell again blasted a solo shot over the right center field fence before Gardner hit a single to left, scoring both Woodward and Brumbaugh to make it 8-3.
Crisswell went 2-for-4 with two home runs, Woodward went 2-for-4 with a home run. Brumbaugh was 3-for-3 at the plate and Gardner was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Woodward went all seven innings in the circle for Mount Union collecting a strikeout and walked zero batters for the game.
