Moving on up!! Lady Huskies top Erie McDowell in rain soaked contest

What a night!

The MIfflin County softball team played a marathon PIAA state playin game with Erie McDowell Wednesday, coming out strong winning 4-3.

Rain delays were a constant in the game tonight as it was halted three different times causing the game to be an almost five hour game when all was said and done.

Madison Wolfgang again had a strong showing on the mound for the “Purple and Black Attack” striking out 11, scattering five hits and allowing three runs.

Offensively, MIfflin County was led by Arika Henry who finished her day going 2-for-4 with one run and an RBI.

Others picking up crucial RBIs for the Huskies were Peyton McClure, Sophie McCurdy and Jaylee Bodtorf.

Mifflin County picked up a run in the second.

With one out, McCurdy reached first on an error after laying down a bunt by the Trojans’ first baseman.

Alexis O’Brien also reached on a McDowell miscue putting runners on first and second.

Bodtorf singled in McCurdy to give the Lady Huskies a 1-0 advantage.

In the third, MIfflin County added to its lead, plating two.

Henry led off with a single and moved up a base on another McDowell error.

McClure quickly singles in Henry, upping the Huskies lead to 2-0.

Dakota Hersberger moved McClure up to second on a fielders choice to third.

She later moved to third on a Riley Hine fielders choice to third, putting her into scoring position.

McCurdy singled in McClure to end the MIfflin County scoring at two runs and a 3-0 advantage.

McDowell tied the contest in the fifth, as the Trojans were able to get a big 3-run inning.

After two previous rain delays, the contest was delayed for well over two hours and a change of venue from Allegheny College to Mercyhurst before the teams headed into the sixth.

When the game restarted, neither team was able to score in the sixth.

So with the drama at a fever pitch, MIfflin County was able to get a run across.

Alaina Sharp started things off with a bunt that was problems for the Trojans as she reached on an error.

Wolfgang moved Sharp over to second on a sacrifice.

Henry picked up the game-winning RBI when she doubled on a line drive to center, making it a 4-3 contest.

That would be all Wolfgang would need as she struck out two batters and took care of a comeback to her in the 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh, giving her team another day and another game in their goal of a state title.
