Penns Valley and Juniata battle in post season atmosphere

By Kenny Varner

MIFFLINTOWN – Two teams both heading into the respective post seasons met Tuesday as the Penns Valley Rams visited the tough Juniata team in a non-league battle.

For most of the contest the game had a postseason type atmosphere as the two teams battled back and forth with each possessing leads until the fourth quarter.

However, the Rams would take advantage of Juniata’s foul troubles and uncharacteristic like misses as they went onto take the victory 59-42.

“A little bit of both. It didn’t help that Mylee Landis was in foul trouble and I had to pull her. That’s when they really took their lead,” said Juniata coach Hannah Geedy when asked about Landis’ late foul trouble and the team’s shots not falling in the fourth. “Yeah, the shots weren’t falling and we had some nice looks at the lay ups and underneath but they just weren’t falling and it looked like everything was falling for them (Penns Valley) in the second half.”

Despite the loss, the Lady Indians out rebounded the Rams, 25-21.

Leading the surge on the boards was Mylee Landis with 13. Landis also had the game-high posting a 25-point night posting a hard earned double-double in the loss. She was the lone multiple scorer for Juniata.

Regan Lowrey finished with six as the next high scorer for the team.

Penns Balley finished with three players posting double digit scoring.

Leading the way was Ellie Romig who finished with five triples on the evening while posting 19.

“We made this closer than we needed to. We didn’t play well in the first half,” said Penns Valley coach Terrance Green. “They made us run. It was like a track meet in we just didn’t control the game. So we came out the second half and controlled it. We just had to control the game. The maturity level of our team they know what to do. We locked in when we needed to and that’s what good teams do.”

Teammate Paige Johnson closely followed with 18.

Rounding out the top scorers was Sydnie Dalton who topped out at 10. Two of her buckets came from beyond the three-point line.

Juniata opened the contest with the momentum.

Landis hit her first shot to give the game its first score.

After forcing a Rams’ turnover, the Indians got the ball down to Reagan Burd on the break, making it a 4-0 advantage.

Penns Valley cut into the lead on its next run down court.

Romig found herself beyond the three-point line and hit nothing but net, cutting it to one.

Sara Montoya followed up with a jumper.

Penns Valley went on a 6-0 run, taking the lead for the first time at 12-8.

But the Lady Indians took it from there ending the quarter on a run of their own.

Leading the 8-0 run was Lindsea Gibson who netted four points while Landis and Lowrey added two each.

When the buzzer sounded in the first quarter, the Indians led 16-12

In the second quarter, Penns Valley started to heat up as they outscored the Indians 13-7, giving them a close 25-23 advantage.

Coming out of the intermission, the two continued their battle with each one taking turns with the lead.

With the game tied at 34-34, Penns Valley’s offense again heated back up as they outscored Juniata by only a 17-15 margin.

Going into the final stanza, both teams were only four points apart at 42-38 in favor of the Rams.

However, Landis got in early foul trouble in the fourth causing her to sit and watch.

Penns Valley rallied as they worked the ball from the inside out with success.

The Lady Indians continued to battle but the Rams were hitting on all cylinders as the game came to a close.

With the win Penns Valley improves to 13-7 overall while Juniata falls to 14-6.

In the JV contest, the Indians held off a late Rams run to hold onto a 43-34 victory.
