Penns Valley came into a critical mid-week match vs Huntingdon with two issues weighing on their minds, a 3-2 loss at Clearfield Monday night , and 5 or so years since their last win against Huntingdon.

At the end of the night, both issues had dissolved into history as Penns Valley notched a major victory to once again get back to .500.

It was a very physical match on a chilly late-September night at Detwiler field as both teams battled from 18 to 18 with a few dangerous attacks from each team. “We came out ready to go tonight and played an excellent control and possession game right from the start” said Penns Valley head coach Ken Gore. “I was really really proud of my guys – they executed our game plan well and settled into a tactical strategy with smart ball movement and well-timed runs to get behind the defense.”

The key point of the match came halfway through the 2nd half when Michael “Dennis” Johnson ripped a fantastic strike from 25 yards out in the midfield. The high shot took the keeper by surprise and sailed 2 feet below the crossbar for the game-winning finish.

“That was definitely the goal of the year so far by Michael – what a brilliant shot! We were hoping to score a couple more goals, but I’ll take the 1-0 victory – a win is a win!” said coach Gore. “We lost all 3 matches to a very strong Huntingdon team last year – including a 1-0 loss in the district playoff – so this was the perfect response after almost a year of remembering that tough match.”

Penns Valley will work to get above .500 now as they head into their next match on Saturday and look ahead to two important matches next week when they travel to Tyrone then battle Bellefonte at home.

Record: 3-3

Next game: Mount Union @ Penns Valley, Saturday 10/3 11:00 am
