Penns Valley girls hold off Tyrone late, winning 3-2

Monday, the Penns Valley girls volleyball team found out they were in a shoot out against Tyrone.

In the end, the Lady Rams were able to muscle out a 3-2 victory over the Golden Eagles.

PV got the scoring underway as Katie Martell scored via an assist by Nikki Denger at 15:09.

The Lady Rams upped its advantage to 2-0 on a Cate Goodwin goal with an assist by Martell at 21:43.

Tyrone cut the Penns Valley lead in half when Alyson Partner posted an unassisted goal at 51:30.

Martell extended the lead back to two as she scored off of a pass by Anna Korman at 53:20.

Tyrone posted a late goal by Sophia Nelson of an assist by Chloe LaRosa at 78:41.

But it was too little too late as the Lady Rams continue its winning ways improving to 9-1 on the season.

“This was another close, tough game against Tyrone, just like the one two days ago.  Overall it ended up being a bit of a strange game for us.  We struggled to settle into the game for long periods and didn’t possess the ball well,” said Penns Valley coach Andrew Beverly. “But we had some good moments going forward and were clinical with some of our chances.  Katie Martell was at the heart of it while scoring two goals from great shots and finding Cate Goodwin’s excellent run for the assist.  Defensively we felt pretty comfortable and kept them to mostly shots from distance.  But credit to Tyrone cause when we thought the game was going our way, they then got goals to make it close each time.  The league is so competitive this year so we’ll take any result we can take.”

The Golden Eagles outshot Penns Valley 17-16.

Penns Valley goalie Kylie Auman finished with 11 saves while Tyrone’s Rayann Walls finished with nine.

Penns Valley’s record is now 9-1 and 7-1 in the Mt. League.  Its next game is on Wednesday at Bellefonte.
