Penns Valley tops PO on late penalty kick

On Wednesday, the Penns Valley girls soccer team topped visiting Philipsburg-Osceola 2-1.

The Mounties opened the scoring on a goal from Khendyl Shanrey thanks to an assist by Schenley Farrell at 1:41

Penns Valley tied it late in the first when Cate Goodwin scored off an Ellie Brinker pass at 39:32.

Penns Valley finished the game in nail biting fashion when Bekah Gillespie scored on a penalty kick at 79:48.

We started the game off about as poorly as one could.  Sure, a tough double overtime game the night before doesn’t help but it’s just something that we needed to deal with better than we did today.  We struggled to get back into the game and thankfully another great goal by Cate Goodwin just before halftime gave us a lift.  The girls responded well to the challenge and stepped it up in the second half but couldn’t quite put it together.  A fortunate call due to the pressure we applied gave us a penalty kick late.  Bekah Gillespie stepped up in the pressure situation and struck a perfect shot off the post and in to win us the game,” said Penns Valley coach Andrew Beverly.

“In the end, while we weren’t happy with the overall performance today, the girls were still able to grind out and get a result against a tough Philipsburg team.”

The Lady Rams held the advantage in shots by a 21-12 margin and corner kicks by a 6-3 edge.

Penns Valley’s record is now 6-6-1 (5-5-1 in the Mt League).
