PO volleyball wins in three; Earns spot in D6 title tilt

The undefeated streak continues.

Going up against a very tough foe Northern Cambria Friday night the Philipsburg-Osceola volleyball team advanced to the District 6 Class AA championship game I three games (25-23, 25-21, 27-25).

Northern Cambria kept all three games close before Philipsburg-Osceola would pull things out at the end, all three times.

“Northern Cambria is an outstanding team. We knew it was going to be a battle. We were just hoping our 12 was a little better than their 12,” said Mounties head coach Dave Eckberg. “A few points here or there made all the deference. Our kids are gutty, I’ll tell you. They fought hard tonight. We were a little down we had some people out with different issues but the kids came up like the next person up.”

Outside hitter Reese Hazelton dominated the contest, helping her team to the victory.

Hazelton was a force behind the offense sparking the team when it needed it.

However, the group didn’t only have a big game from Hazelton it was more of a group effort as numerous players stood up and answered the calls when asked to.

Even when trailing in the second game, the Mounties were able to rally back and then hold on late to the victory.

In the first game, the Colts and Mounties got right down to buisness as the two went back and forth exchanging side outs.

Tied at three, Northern picked up the first two service points of the game coming from the shots by Margureite Hogan, taking the lead at 5-3.

Hazelton, who had a hand in securing 36 points by herself, got her team going helping with getting her teammate Janey Johnson put her team ahead, 6-5.

PO held a 9-7 lead when London Cutler got hot from the service line, upping the lead to 11-7.

The Mounties maintained the lead, even adding to it building up a 19-15 advantage.

Back battled the Colts as the came back to cut the lead to one at 22-21.

It would remain close all the way down to 24-23 then a violation on the serve cost Cambria the victory.

After falling behind 5-1, the Mounties were able to chip into the lead slowly and tied the game at seven with two service points by  Hazelton  and later tied the game at nine.

From there, the Mounties offense rolled off a service point from Paige Jarrett and four consecutive points from Cutler en route to the 25-21 victory.

In the final game, the two battled down to the final points as the Lady Mounties sealed the deal at 27-25.

With the win, the Mountain League champs will play the winner of Bald Eagle Area/Forrest Hills winner in the District 6 Championship game TBA.
