Queens of the diamond; MC Majors win D5 title

By Kenny Varner

LEWISTOWN – You could cut the tension with a knife Thursday afternoon as the Mifflin County Major League All-Stars battled Four Leaf for the District 5 softball title.

The game was a back-and-forth battle on the field as the two went into the fifth inning tied at nine.

A 2-run bottom of the fifth by Mifflin County proved to be the clincher as the “Purple and White” came out with the win.

Picking up the win for Mifflin County was Falynn Reinard who came in in relief of starting pitcher Piper Specht.

However, the spunky play by the Four Leaf was led by pitcher Makena Moore as she went the distance striking out seven batters and allowed eight hits. Moore was a tough out at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with 3RBIs. Her hit was a base clearing double in the second.

On this night, Mifflin County had an answer for everything that Four Leaf has thrown at them en route to the title.

“We knew it was going to be tough coming into the game. We played them up there and it was a 2-run ball game. We knew what we were getting into. We had to hit the ball when the opportunity presented itself,” said Mifflin County manager Jason Treaster. “They did what they needed to do.”

Playing in the visitors position,  Four Leaf wasted little time getting on the board, posting two in its first at bats.

Lead off hitter Mallory Graham smacked a single down the first base line for first hit of the game.

With two out, Greyson Gable took a Mifflin County offering into deep centerfield and sped her way around the bases, making it 2-0.

Mifflin County rallied back in the bottom of the inning, scoring four.

Grace Paez-Davoli led off with a single to left.

Reinard followed with a walk.

Kendall Cavanaugh hustled out a Four Leaf miscue, loading the bases.

Alexis O’Brien picked up an RBI walk, cutting the lead in half.

Jolee Bodtorf smacked a 2-RBI double to give her team the 3-2 advantage.

Bailey Wyland added another run as a hit a sacrifice fly to center to score O’Brien.

However, Four Leaf was just getting warmed up as it battled back in the second to take back the lead on a 5-run showing.

With two outs, pinch hitter Alexys McGovern showed patience at the plate and walked to keep the inning alive.

Graham also reached on a walk.

Haley Woodling loaded up the bases with a seeing-eye infield single.

Carson Wesesky singled to pull her team to within one, scoring McGovern.

Greyson Gable kept the rally going, posting another RBI single in keeping the bases loaded.

The stage was set for Moore to help her own cause and she did not disappoint as she sent a blast that cleared the bases, except for her.

When the dust settled, Four Leaf regained the lead at 7-4.

But the lead would not last long as the home team tied things in their portion of the second, tying it at seven.

Reinard led off the second, reaching on an error.

Cavanaugh brought in Reinard on a smoking double down left field line.

Bodtorf also reached on an error and was replaced on the base path by special pinch runner Olivia Metz.

Wyland broke the tie as she hit a shot into deep left center and motored all the way around for the inside-the-park home run.

In the third, Mifflin County rallied for two more to take back the lead at 9-7.

Now coming in as a pinch hitter, Metz had the play of the game as she blasted a 2-run inside the park home run of her own, giving her team the advantage.

But with good teams the group battled back to tie things in the top of the fourth.

Wesesky got the inning going with a walk.

Her stay on base was very short thanks to a long blast by Gable that scored Wesesky and landed Gable on second. She moved up to third on a fielders choice and then scored on a wild pitch, tying things at nine.

But Mifflin County battled with two in the fifth and held onto to a late rally to pick up the victory.

With one out, Cavanaugh reached on a walk.

O’Brien kept things going with a single that drove in Cavanaugh.

Bodtorf brought in O’Brien for the final run of the game.

In both games against Mifflin County, Four Leaf battled hard losing 6-4 and 11-9.

But the group finished as District 5 runner up and Mifflin County stood at the top as District champs once again.
