Selinsgrove too tough for Central Mountain

By Kenny Varner

LOCK HAVEN – Thursday night, the Central Mountain Wildcats soccer team took the prime spot as they battled a very tough Selinsgrove team at home.

“Selinsgrove does a real good job pressuring all the time and we didn’t handle it well,” said Central Mountain coach Billy Hook. “After the first goal everything seemed to drop then. Like we assumed we had no chance. But obviously we are going to work to fix that problem.”

Coming in with a 3-3 overall record, the Wildcats were looking to knock off the very motivated Seals team lead by Owen Magee.

Early on, the two went toe-to-toe with each other but the fast paced prowess of Selinsgrove started to run down the Wildcats less than midway through the first.

In the end, the seals remain undefeated in the league and one loss overall.

The Wildcats fall to 3-4 overall.

One bright spot for the Wildcats was the goalie play of Greg Walizer.

Despite giving up four-first half goals, he was as aggressive as anyone on the team, saving five in the first half.

The uptempo style of play by Selinsgrove opened things up early on as Magee cracked a hat trick in the first half alone.

Selinsgrove found the back of the net for the first time off of a corner. With the kick hitting in the middle of traffic Jamison Bohnor got control and sent it home at 30:04.

That would be the only score made until the clock dipped under 20 minutes.

From there, Magee started to light things up, posting unassisted goals at 18:56, 15:16 and 9:09 giving his team a comfortable 4-0 advantage at halftime.

Selinsgrove outshot Central Mountain 11-2 and led in corners by a 2-1 margin.

Coming out of the intermission, the Seals didn’t miss a beat as they pushed the ball back into the Wildcats back-third hoping to add onto their lead.

At 34:12, Nick Ritter added a fifth goal to add to the Seals lead.

Central Mountain had its chances at the Seals back-third but couldn’t find the opening it needed to finish the deal.

Despite the deficit, the Wildcats remained aggressive and refused to go away without a fight.

The defense continues to play hard when called upon, trying to keep the Seals from adding to its 5-0 lead.

On an indirect kick attempt at 13:19, Selinsgrove added another goal to the scoreboard as he hit a curving shot that handcuffed the Wildcats goalie, making it 6-0.

Central Mountain takes to the road Tuesday to play Jersey Shore.
