Shippensburg’s Shoemaker and Everly have strong showing in season opener

SU receives strong showings across the board in season opener

A number of the Shippensburg University wrestling team’s many freshmen impressed, but it was two seasoned veterans that brought home the biggest prize to open the season during the Alvernia Invitational Saturday at the Flynn Complex.

Graduate student Al Miscovich (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant Area (Pitt-Johnstown)) won a number of close matches to capture the title in a crowded 141-pound bracket, while Danny Scheib (Hegins, Pa./Tri-Valley) powered his way to win at 285 pounds.

Miscovich won one-point decisions over Muhlenberg wrestler Chris Dalmau (4-3) and Alvernia’s Avery Leonard (5-4) in the semifinals and finals.

Scheib was up 3-0 over Shenandoah University’s Robert Gray before winning via injury default. A first-period takedown was the difference in the 285-pound final, where he fended off late offense from Alvernia’s Palmer Rodenhaber to win a 3-2 decision.

Elsewhere, freshman Mike Trainor (Cochranville, Pa./Octorara) reached the final at 149 pounds. Trainor was behind to Alvernia’s Chance Babb 6-2 enter the third period,but finished with a flurry. He took down Babb three times in the final two minutes, including once in the desperate final moments, but came up short in an agonizing 10-9 loss.

Trainor’s classmates, fellow freshmen and Mifflin County natives Kyler Everly (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) and Trey Shoemaker (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) fought their way through wrestlebacks to finish third at 165 and 197 pounds, respectively. Shoemaker won five matches at 197 pounds, including four by pin.

Redshirt-sophomore Nyiem Flucas (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) also finished third at 174 pounds after winning five straight times in wrestlebacks.

Shippensburg will compete again in two weeks at the Waynesburg Duals.
