Smith’s late inning heroics sends MC 15s to Final Four Appearance in the Babe Ruth World Series Championship tournament

EAGLE PASS, Tx. – To take a phrase from the Iconic Ray Wilde….”MC Baby!!!”

Mifflin County’s Xavier Smith was cool under pressure as he blasted a clutch 2-run smash to take the Mid-Atlantic champs from the agony of defeat to the thrill of victory with one sweet swing of the bat, earning him the win and the MVP of the game.

They survive to play another game!!

Putting all of the drama behind them from Sunday’s game against the Tallahassee, Florida game, the Mid-Atlantic Babe Ruth champs were laser focused and ready to go in its Babe Ruth World Series elimination championship bracket game against the Midwest Plains team from Bismarck, North Dakota.

Pitching for Mifflin County was Landen Eichhorn as he went up against North Dakota’s Parker Saqsveen.

Eichhorn was dominant on the mound, allowing only three hits in his time on the mound. He struck out five and only walked three.

As visitors, Trevor Sheaffer led off with a double. He Moved to second on wild pitch by Saqsveen.

But he would be left stranded, going into the bottom of the inning.

Midwest Plains got a runner on early after a MC miscue. He was Lucas Vasey.

A fielder’s choice scored Vasey, plating the first and only run of the game.

Ryan Hine had two hits for Mifflin County while Xavier Smith’s 2-run blast, rallied the kids from Mifflin County to the 2-1 win.

But despite a shaky start, Mifflin County’s defense clamped down and held it to a 1-run game going into the second.

Ryan Hine led off the MC second at bats, he walked. He was caught stealing on a called third strike to Doug Weaver.

With two out, Deakon Schaeffer walked to keep the inning alive.

But Mifflin County couldn’t get anything going and stranded Schaeffer.

Top third, Tucker Gill walked with two outs. Gill moved to second on the wild pitch, putting him scoring position.

The MC crew have been getting runners on base but are one or two hits away from a big inning.

Eli Thompson opened the bottom of the inning with a hit. He moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt.

Gavin Lil flew out to end the threat.

The game continued to fly by at a rapid pace, Ryan Hine led things off for Mifflin County in the fourth. With a sizzling single into right field with one out.

Doug Weaver hit in a fielder’s choice as Hine was forced off the base paths.

Going into the bottom of the inning, Northwest Plains still lead 1-0.

Mifflin County’s Eichhorn kept the North Dakota team at bay.

The bats went were again silent for Mifflin County in the fifth.

Leading off the sixth, Xavier Smith singled into left to start out the inning.

With the hit, the Northwest Plains went to the bullpen bringing in Isaac Mitchell.

Kanagy moved Smith up to second on a chopper to second.

With one out Ryan Hine stepped up to the plate. Hine walked, putting runners on first and second.

A sacrifice fly by Doug Weaver, advanced both Smith and Hine to third and second, respectively.

But Bismarck held it together, keeping the runners stranded.

In the seventh, Eichhorn tried to help his own cause sending a shot into left. Eichhorn was forced out by a fielder’s choice by Trevor Sheaffer.  Tucker Gill singled with two out.  A 2-run double by Smith, put MC in the lead, taking it to the bottom of seventh with a chance to advance and move on.

North Dakota would not go away quietly as they led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk to Saqsveen.

Mifflin County will be back in action Tuesday to battle New England at nine pm.

The thrill ride continues for Mifflin County as they reach the final four.
