St. Joseph Boys battle tough in season opening tourney

Friday: Saint Joseph’s opened their season against tournament host Brookville, defending 3A champs from District 9.  Brookville jumped out early and took a big lead into halftime (51-19).  The Wolfpack battled in the third quarter, but ultimately were not able to cut into the lead and Brookville won it going away 86-39.  Brendan Scanlon led the team with 23 points, while Danny Dawson added seven.

Saturday:  The Wolfpack faced AA Brockway in the consolation game.  Brockway’s pressure defense and outside shooting carried them to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.  After fighting to get back into it in the 2nd, Brockway took the momentum into the half, leading 41-26.  The second half was a much different story, as the Wolfpack cleaned up the turnovers, shut down Brockway’s leading scorer and ultimately rode some hot shooting of their own to a 4th quarter lead.  Unfortunately, we were not able to execute down the stretch and were not able to hold on.  Brockway hit two free throws with 1.5 seconds left to put the game away 64-62.  Brendan Scanlon again led the way with a career high 37 points.   Aidan Cross added 10 points.

Brendan Scanlon was named to the Brookville Tip-off “All-Tournament Team.”

“The team grew up a lot over the course of two games.  Friday night was a very difficult way to open up the season, against a terrific opponent, but they battled regardless,” said St. Joes coach Richard Ciambotti. “Saturday the team could have folded.  Instead they fought back into the game and took the lead late.  Now we just need to learn how to finish.  The improvement over four halves of basketball was excellent.”
