State College field hockey celebrates Senior day with win over Newport

SC Field Hockey celebrated Senior Day at Memorial Field on Saturday, Oct. 3. State College and Newport’s seniors were recognized as part of the senior day festivities. SC seniors,Rebecca Bonness, Bayla Furmanek, Johannah Lee, IsabellaParrillo, Lizzie Paterno, Maddie Tambroni, Nicole Zeiler, and Jena Zeiler, were recognized with their families. There are currently three seniors who will continue their field hockey careers at the college level: Rebecca Bonness at American University, Bayla Furmanek at Babson College and Maddie Tambroni at Penn State University. Following the festivities, Rebecca Bonness sang the National Anthem to start the game.

Newport was the first to put points on the board at the 4:07 mark in the first quarter with a goal from Maria Capozzoli assisted by Sophia Shoemaker. State College answered at 3:19 when Maddie Tambroni drove the ball into the circle to her teammateNicole Zeiler, who tipped it into the cage. The score remained tied at 1-1 until after halftime, when in the third quarter Newport’s Sophia Shoemaker scored on a penalty stork as she lifted a clean shot to the top of the cage. Lizze Paterno scored her first goal for the season at 9:18 to even the score. Although State College struggled with several penalties, they took the lead at 7:21 in the 3rd quarter when Rebecca Bonness drove the ball into the circle to Olivia Miller who deflected it into the cage. Newport answered in the 4th quarter with a goal from Payton Splain to tie the game, once again, now at 3-3. With 3:30 left in the 4th quarter, Rebecca Bonness drove the ball into the circle and Johannah Lee knocked it into the cage to put State College in the lead during the final minutes. The hard-fought game ended with a final score of 4-3 giving State College a win on their Senior Day. State College is now 3-0 for the season and will play Cumberland Valley on Monday, Oct. 5.
